Roy Gutmann Obituary
Obituary published on Legacy.com by Egan-Ryan Funeral Service - Northwest Chapel on Sep. 18, 2025.
Roy K. Gutmann, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother, passed away on September 15, 2025, in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 91. A lifelong resident of Columbus, Roy's warmth, humor, and zest for life left an indelible mark on his family and community.
Born in 1933 to Harold E. Gutmann and Hattie Mae "Mae" White Gutmann, Roy grew up in Columbus, where he forged deep ties to the city he called home. He was a devoted husband to Margaret Gutmann (née Schubert), his partner in a lifetime of love and laughter. Together, they raised five children: Kathy Kiefer, Margaret "Peggy" Muskoff (d. 1997), Julie (Steve) Caton, John Gutmann (d. 2022), and Tom (Airianne) Gutmann.
Roy was a proud grandfather to 7 grandchildren: Carly, Jamie, and Delaney Caton (children of Julie and Steve Caton); Joe, Maggie, and Libby Kiefer (children of Kathy and Gary Kiefer); Neil Gutmann (son of John Gutmann); and was blessed with 5 great grandchildren (Abigail, Tillie, Gemma, Mia, Theo). He delighted in their company, always ready with a joke or a story to share. Roy was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Paul P. Gutmann, Leo E. Gutmann, and Mary F. Gutmann Conti, as well as his son John and daughter Peggy, who is survived by her husband, John Muskoff.
Known for his wonderful spirit and good humor, Roy had a knack for brightening any room. He was an avid card player, often found at the table with family and friends, strategizing and laughing over a lively game. His garden was his sanctuary, where he nurtured plants with care and pride, coaxing beauty from the soil. Roy also boasted a pretty good golf game, enjoying rounds on the fairways with his brother Leo and his many friends. Never one to turn down a bowl of ice cream, he relished life's simple pleasures, and his delight in finding a surprise package on the front patio was a testament to his playful, appreciative nature.
Roy was a proud graduate of St. Charles Preparatory School and Ohio State University, and was a longtime parishioner at Our Lady of Victory. His legacy lives on through the love he shared, the laughter he inspired, and the memories he created with those fortunate enough to know him.
