Gary Tollefson Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Apr. 2, 2009.
Tollefson, Gary D., M.D., Ph.D. Indianapolis resident, medical inventor and executive who helped revolutionize the field of neuropsychiatric medications, died Monday, March 30, 2009, after a battle with Luekemia. He was 58 years old. Dr. Tollefson, who held a medical degree in psychiatry and a Ph.D in psychopharmacology, is perhaps best known for his work at Eli Lilly and Company, where as a past president of the Neuroscience Product Group, he directed programs for schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, depression and other related disorders. His leadership led to drugs that revolutionized the field and became household names. These included Prozac, Cymbalta and Zyprexa among others. Dr. Tollefson is also personally credited with co-inventing the drug Strattera for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). After 13 years at Lilly, Dr. Tollefson left the large corporate world to become Chief Executive Officer of a San Diego based start-up, Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc., where he applied his background in psychiatry and pharmacology to the field of obesity, targeting the problem of excessive weight gain through neural pathways to the brain. During his tenure, he led Orexigen as it grew from a small, private operation into a publicly traded company with multiple drugs in late stage clinical trials. Dr. Tollefson resigned from Orexigen late last year to focus on his health and other business pursuits. Despite his illness he remained active as a medical innovator, serving as co-founder and board member of a start-up neuroscience company, Euthymics Bioscience, Inc., to develop a novel antidepressant without the typical side effects that can discourage patients from staying on their medications. A Minnesota native, Dr. Tollefson obtained his Bachelor's Degree in psychology Summa Cum Laude in 1973 and his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1976 from the University of Minnesota, where he completed a residency in psychiatry and a Ph.D in psychopharmacology (1980). Prior to beginning his career in the pharmaceutical industry in 1991, Dr. Tollefson was the chairperson of the Department of Psychiatry at the St. Paul-Ramsey Medical Center and an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Minnesota Hospitals. He was an active researcher who authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and a number of book chapters. Dr. Tollefson was married to the former Karin Anna Graffeo. She and her son, Cal Graffeo, Dr. Tollefson's stepson, survive him, as do his daughters, Elizabeth and Theresa Tollefson both of Indianapolis, and Tina Tollefson of San Diego CA. A Memorial Service will be held Thursday, April 2, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with funeral services Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Simon the Apostle, 8155 Oaklandon Rd., Indianapolis. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Dr.Tollefson to the IU Foundation IU Simon Cancer Center/leukemia research and mailed to IU Simon Cancer Center, P.O. Box 660245, Indianapolis, IN 46266-0245. On-line donations may be made at: www.cancer.iu.edu. and/or the National Institute of Mental Health. Arrangements entrusted to Shirley Brothers Fishers-Castleton Chapel.

It's been 10 years and according to my own experience, decades only help to cope with the grief and sorrow of the loss.
I'm sending sincere symphaty to all his family members and friends.

Please accept my belated condolences; I just heard and my heart sank on this news : I had the chance to work with him in CNS group (1993 - 1997/ Turkey) and honored by his accepting my invitation as a speaker at a major congress in Turkey, Istanbul.
I shall always remember him by his wise comments, practical solutions and cool attitude.

My sympathy goes out to Gary's family. I had the pleasure of working with Gary at Eil Lilly. He was truly a brilliant scientist driven by a compassion for patients suffering from psychiatric disorders with a focus on making their lives better. He will truly be missed.

A brilliant man, and a great father as well.I had the privilege of working with Gary`s daughter, Elizabeth. If Gary`s work
ethic and compassion as a human being is anything like either of his daughters, then i can see why he is so loved and admired.

My deepest sympathy to the Tollefson family. Gary and I were colleagues at St. Paul-Ramsey and he provided consultation to our patients at the Family Medicine Center. He was an outstanding clinician, scientist and person.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Dr.Tollefson. He was my doctor when I was a patient at the St.Paul-Ramsey inpatient and outpatient departments. He was a very good doctor and I'm sure a good person as well. He helped me to recover from depression and anxiety which I now know can be overcome with therapy and psychiatric medications. I am well, in part, due to having Dr.Tollefson as one of my physicians back about 20 years ago. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones who were so lucky to know him well.

My deepest sympathy to the Tollefson family. I remember my cousin, Gary, from his early childhood days - always an achiever then and how profound his accomplishments have been through the years. God bless!

What an amazing man with so very many accomplishments that helped others lead a fullfilling life. I too went to school with Gary in Faribault. He will be sadly missed by friends, family and the many who he has helped over a much too short, but very productive lifetime. Prayers to his family. God Bless.
