Robert Hume Obituary

Published by Star Tribune on Dec. 9, 2012.
Hume, Robert "Bob" Marshall III Devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, world-class chemical engineer and inventor died of heart failure on December 7, 2012 at age 65. His parents, Robert and Rosemary, as well as his brother, William preceded him in death. Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Bob attended the University of Maine, Orono for both undergraduate and graduate work. Bob grew up in Maine and married the love of his life, Candie, who sat by his side through a long illness to the very end of his life. Bob and Candie moved to Minnesota and raised 4 children: Jobin, Courtney (Ken Foster), Bob (Carrie Lucking), and Ashley (Aaron Saar). A prolific inventor, Bob obtained numerous patents as a Director of Research and Development for HB Fuller, as well as through independent work. When not tinkering in his lab (or the kitchen), Bob loved to fly-fish, hunt, and watch politics on FOX News. More recently, Bob spent most of his time playing with his beloved granddaughter, Harper, who was the light of his life. In addition to Harper, there are many children who called him "Grandpert" and he loved them all. Bob is survived by his wife and children, as well as his brothers, Benjamin and John David (Tim Vigue), and numerous family friends like Terry and Jeanne Lund and Jim and Dar Hagquist who gave him comfort and joy. The Hume family would like to send their deepest appreciation to the doctors and staff at Abbott Northwestern Hospital and the Minneapolis Heart Institute for their care and support. Visitation will be held at 2 PM on 12/13 with service following at 4 PM. Both will take place at Lutheran Church of Peace, 47 Century Ave. S. Maplewood, MN 55119. Memorials should be sent to the Robert Hume Memorial Scholarship Fund at the University of Maine, Orono or the Minneapolis Heart Institute.

Bob was a very smart and innovative person.

In industry he operated "outside the box" which made him unpopular with certain people so set in their ways.

I knew Robert during our time together at the U of Maine in Orono, Maine...as we were both fellow Chemical Engineers as well as fellow fraternity brothers..and both wound up associated with the Paper Industry. Bob's younger days were spent in Millinocket Maine...where I found myself after some initial years in the industry. I'm so sorry to hear that Bob has passed away and my condolences to Candie whom I also knew before they were married or had any children. I still think often of Bobby and his unique personality which I'm sure he carried to his last days. I'm sorry that we fell out of touch so many years ago, but have always wished Bobby well. May there be comfort and solace within his family that his robust and joyful spirit will indeed never die.

Candie and Bob,
It was with great sadness that I read of Bob's passing. I so enjoyed his sense of humor at the bridge table in St. Rita's duplicate in Cottage Grove. It was added priviledge to meet your son, Bob, when he was in my sixth grade class at Grey Cloud.
You both and all of your family are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

I really enjoyed working with and for Bob in the laboratory. He really enjoyed being involved with everyone. He also showed a great deal of patience, just waiting for people to figure out what his latest idea was all about. A more intelligent, inventive and caring person I'll probably never meet. It was an honor to have known Bob over the years.

Bob was a great friend, a one of a kind person, whose memory will always be treasured by those of us who were fortunate enough to know him.
"Think about it!" he would often say to us, after presenting a brilliant but very challenging new idea. This week we are thinking about him, and the memories are heart-warming.

We only met Bob a couple of times and realized what a great person he was: warm, kind, gentle and caring! We knew him best through our Grandchildren as 'Grampert'. A big 'Thank You' Grampert for accepting and loving everyone as though they were all part of your immediate family! You will be missed by those whose lives you've touched...Because of that, you will definitely live on! Peace and strength to Candie, Jobin, Courtney, Bob and Ashley.
