Everett Hankinson Obituary

Everett Conway Hankinson Everett Conway Hankinson, beloved husband, father and grandfather was called home to the Father on Tuesday, April 16, 2013 in Austin, Texas at the age of 92. A member of the Greatest Generation, Everett (Hank) was born on Nov. 11, 1920 in Gillespie County, near Fredericksburg, Texas to parents Evan and Pearl Hankinson. He had older brothers, Wyatt and Lovett, now deceased, and a younger sister, June, who has been very special to him throughout his life. In his early years, he helped his parents farm ... raising cotton, peanuts, dairy cattle and other crops during the hard days of the depression. He dropped out of school to go to work when his father became ill, working until he enlisted in the Army Air Corps the day after Pearl Harbor in 1941. He made it into flight training graduating in 1943, instructing other pilots, and then went overseas with the ninth air force as a B-26 pilot, serving in the European theater, England, France, Germany and Belgium. In 1943 he married the love of his life, Flora Mae McKaig, to whom he has been married for 70 years. They were blessed to have one daughter, Jill, who was born on his birthday ... Nov. 11, 3 grandchildren, and 9 great grandchildren. After the war, Hank began his career in sales with Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co. in San Antonio, moving the family to Tulsa, Oklahoma and then Youngstown, Ohio. He left 3M to go with Jenkins Valve Co. as regional sales manager and got the family back to Texas in 1962, moving to Houston. Hank and Flora enjoyed many years and many friendships in Houston before they retired in 1983 and moved to Austin to live near Jill and family. They were fortunate to have nearly 30 contented years of retirement, close friends, bridge, and golf at Great Hills Country Club. During this time Hank volunteered many hours at the Retirement Center Nursing Home, the Salvation Army, and Hospice Austin, Christopher House. He shared in the "Five Who Care" community service award presented by KVUE in 2003. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a faithful member of St. John's United Methodist Church. Hank lived a satisfying and joyful life, enjoying the friendship and love of family and friends, outliving most of his contemporaries. Friends and family will never forget Hank as "Uncle Sam", in full costume at various events over the years, sharing his patriotism with young and old. His family treasured the affectionate saluting of the great grandsons on greeting and saying good bye to PawPaw in respect and awe of his WWII service. He was the best father, grandfather and great grandfather anyone could have. Everett (Hank) leaves behind a grateful family, wife Flora of 70 years; daughter Jill and husband Lynn Turlington; grandsons, Todd Turlington and wife Carrie, Kyle Turlington and wife Catherine; granddaughter, Stacy Dollar and husband, Jerry. Also the treasured great grandchildren, Mier Simpson, Josie Turlington, Will Turlington, Everett (Rhett) Dollar, Reid Turlington, Wyatt Dollar, Cate Turlington, Lainey Dollar and Clara Dollar. Besides the immediate family he leaves behind his beloved sister, June Schoultz and husband Jim of San Antonio, and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws who are very special to him. Everett's family is very appreciative of the loving care of the staff of the Querencia where he lived for 5 years. A graveside service will be at Austin Memorial Park at 1:00 on Friday April 19. A celebration of Hank's life will follow at the Turlington's home. Memorials in Hank's memory may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, 4899 Belfort Road, Suite 300, Jacksonville, FL 32256 (www.woundedwarriorproject.org) or Hospice Austin, 4107 Spicewood Springs Rd, Ste 100, Austin, TX 78759 in lieu of flowers. Hank was a lovely Hospice Austin Christopher House volunteer for years and came every Monday with a smile and tender heart. Our staff knew our patients were in good hands when Hank was with them sharing stories, helping with needs and offering his kind pressence. His dedicated and kind spirit is greatly missed. Love from all our Hospice Austin Christopher House Volunteers and staff.

Dear Aunt Flora, Jill, Lynn and family,
Take comfort in knowing that now you have a special guardian angel to watch over you, if he is not busy playing dominoes or golf with dad. We will always cherish his memory as a perfect gentleman, and that he was the greatest of the greatest generation.
