Barbara and family,
I have such wonderful memories of being in choirs beginning when Joe came to FBC. He spoiled me forever in how a choir director should be - dedicated to the Lord and His direction, gifted musically, but more interested in his choirs worshipping and leading others in worship than in performing well. Choir tours, practices, friendships, growing in my own relationship with the Lord - how much he influenced us in all the right ways! I have a grateful heart to the Lord for him and his wonderful family.
Praising and rejoicing with you that he is home now and as others have mentioned, singing in the heavenly choir. He sang "I Talked to God Last Night" at least one of the years we went on tour and I can still hear him singing the climax. And now he's there!
Love and prayers and blessings,

It was such a privilege to have Joe at First Baptist in my formative singing years (my favorite was the white smock & big maroon bow) and for him to bless us again in his retirement. It was wonderful to have the chance for him to lead us again on Sunday morning for a few times too. He now has strength to sing all the time. Mother sends her love and prayers as well.

Joe Carrell was a blessing throughout my teen years. I remember choir tours. But the best memory was that he sang at my wedding in 1990. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

Joe Carrell's legacy of ministry and service through church music has spanned the state and nation through his own ministry and his influence continues through the life of his son, Stephen, currently music minister at FBC San Antonio. His encouragement to our music ministry, and to Stephen as he grew into his calling, will be greatly missed by us. May God's presence bring comfort and peace to his loved ones in this time of goodbyes. In His love,

I was blessed enough to have Joe lead whatever choir I was in from the 4th grade through my freshman year at TJC. My family joined FBC Tyler in 1958 when Dr. Shamburger and Joe came. So much of my love and appreciation of music came from Joe, and his relationship with God through music changed the lives of all of us youth. We have had reunions of Chapel choir and it is a testimony to Joe how many people came from all over to fill the choir loft because of those special years we shared with him. How many of you will never forget "d'how" when you sing "Redeemed How I Love to Proclaim It"? Friends we had at school would join Chapel Choir to go on tour and then they would become a Christian and start coming to all of church! And he used to tease me because I would come home from Baylor and sing with the Chapel choir - he said he could just see me coming in on my cane some day to sing with the Chapel choir! And what minister of music did you ever hear of who retired on the condition that he get to keep the Chapel choir? What joy my mother and Dr. Shamburger and Joe are having with our Lord face to face!

I cannot hear, sing, or even think of "Sweet, Sweet Spirit" without thinking of Joe T. and Barbara. I cannot imagine the world without him. But now I know God's Choir has the best director. We will all sing together again when we meet in heaven.

I loved Joe and appreciated all the Choir tours he took us on and all the youth choir practices and all of the kindness that he extended to me always as a teenagers at Hyde Park Baptist. I will always remember him and his amazing service and love for Jesus. Stephen ...I loved your dad and he meant the world to me as a young person. Lea Turner Whatley

I guess GOD needed the best to lead the choirs in Heaven. He truly made me who I am with GOD today. I will always remember the trip to Penn. with the youth choir at Hyde Park. On the way home, My sister Kay, and I decided to try and form a Girls quartet. We were trying to keep it quiet but Joe T. came running down the aisle asking "What boy is singing that bass?" My face was totally red to admit it was me, Cissi Cearley Wright, but from this, Joe T. started the Peacemakers and yes I sang anywhere I was needed!!! We love ya'll and hope the Carrell Family will be lifted up by GOD.

Joe was an inspiration to my family at FBC Tyler in the 60's. I remember him fondly, not only for wat he taught me about singing, but he was absolutely the best dresser of any minister I ever knew! Just the other day I came across the album that the youth choir recorded in 66-67. Fond memories of a better time.

Barbara and family,
Our family has lost a great friend. Joe and all of you were a huge influence on our family while at HPBC in Austin. Nina, Diane, Jennifer all sang in his choirs. He was an ENT patient of mine(Ron) and he performed Jennifer's wedding ceremony. He and Daniel sang in her wedding. He was a true man of God and will be missed by all. We hope we can join his choir in Heaven someday. Our prayers are with your family. Ron and Nina Deskin

I had the privilege to sing in the Hyde Park Baptist Church Chapel Choir, in Austin Texas, during my high school years. Joe T. inspired me to worship and praise our Lord through music. I traveled on 4 summer choir mission trips, with Joe T. as our leader and director.
I can never express what his leadership, love, and support meant to me. My fondest memories will forever be the years I sang in that Chapel Choir, with the leadership of Joe T.
My prayers and love go to the Carrel family.

Dear Carrell Family,
Even though we did not know Joe Carrell personally, he has blessed our lives through Stephen here at First Baptist in San Antonio. What a wonderful man he must have been and what a beautiful legacy he leaves. Your hearts must be very sad today, but just think...he is singing the Hallelujah chorus with the angels in Heaven. Please know that you are in our prayers. May God give you comfort.

I first met Joe while on staff at First Baptist Church, Tyler. I quickly learned why the membership loved him so much. Not long after meeting Joe, he accepted the position of interim music minister at my home church, Gateway Baptist in Whitehouse. I was the pianist, therefore our relationship quickly grew to one of much love and admiration. Joe was a true professional, but most of all a genuine Christian who loved his Lord. My heart is rejoicing as I know he is singing in the choir of heaven today. I know the day will come when we will all sing together again. My love and prayers are extended to his family.

The choir and membership of Gateway Baptist Church desires to honor our friend, Joe Carrell, for his time as interim music minister at our church. Joe came at a time when we needed his gentle, sweet spirit in combination with his many years of experience leading church worship and choir. Joe was in our midst during the Christmas season and brought such a warm, at home feeling to our music program. With the Holy Spirit as his guide, he challenged us often without our knowledge. He was truly a gifted man. We know he is now singing in the presence of Jesus, a place where he is very comfortable and at home. He was loved by all of us and he will be missed. We send our love to his precious wife, Barbara, and their family.

I have very fond memories of Joe while in the HS Choir at Hyde Park. He was such a great man!! I was so saddened when I got this news from my Mother-in-law Kleta Miller. Joe was a very dear friend to the entire Miller family. My thoughts and prayers go out to his entire family - may God comfort you all during this difficult time.

Barbara and family, I can't tell you how much Joe Carrell influenced my life. I was in youth choir and then in adult choir with him. The choir trips he lead us on were GREAT!! I still to this day use what Joe taught us in choir. I am active in choir at Green Acres Baptist church and everytime we practice I remember something Joe said or taught us. He was a Wonderful Christian Man of God. You and yours are in my prayers. Love In the LORD- Pat Burton Flake

While I was not a member of FBC Tyler, Joe was one of my "heros." He inspired me to be what God called me to be - a minister of music. His was the first gorgeous tenor voice I heard as a teenager and I remember thinking how great it would be to be able to sing that beautifully. His life is a testimony to being the best one can be and using the talent one is given to the glory of God.
I am grateful that I was impacted by him, even from afar.
