Don BAYLOR Obituary

BAYLOR, Sr., Don Edward Don Edward Baylor, Sr. was on born on June 28, 1949 in Austin, Texas to George and Lillian Baylor. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church for more than sixty years where he served as Deacon until his death. Don also held dual membership at Second Baptist Church in Indio, California under the leadership of Pastor Ricky B. Williams. Don was a devoted father and in 1972, he experienced great joy with the birth of his son, Don, Jr. Donny was his pride and joy and Don reveled in setting up travel arrangements for Donny to and from cities and stadiums throughout the U.S. and beyond. Donny learned many valuable lessons from his father throughout their travels. Their most memorable moments were at the dinner table shared with many family and friends and stadiums throughout the league. He was also a devoted husband and married the love of his life, his wife, Becky on December 12, 1987 and remained in holy matrimony for nearly thirty years. They shared many highlights throughout their extra innings love story. Together they were a dynamic duo and great ambassadors of the game. Don grew up in Austin, Texas in the community of Clarksville where he was a natural born athlete and leader that excelled at football and baseball. He was one of three African Americans to integrate public schools in Austin, Texas when he attended O. Henry Junior High School in the 1960s. He was the first African American athlete at Stephen F. Austin High School where he later graduated. His high school coach, Frank Seale has remained an important part of his life and family. Don was a man of many firsts, he was offered a scholarship to play football at the University of Texas by coach Darrell Royal which would have made him the first African American to play football at UT. As you know, Don opted to pursue his baseball career and enrolled at Blinn Junior College in Brenham, Texas. He was drafted in the second round of the 1967 draft by the Baltimore Orioles, a team studded with future Hall of Famers. With the Orioles in the early 1970s, Don made his major league debut, broke into the everyday lineup, collected his first postseason RBIs, and earned his nickname of "Groove". When Don retired, he held the major league record for being hit by a pitch 267 times and led the majors in that category seven times. Don's 19 year career was spent in the American League as an outfielder, first baseman and designated hitter for six teams highlighted with winning the American League MVP with the Angels in 1979. He reached the World Series three straight seasons (with three different teams) from 1986 to 1988. Don was named the National League Manager of the Year in 1995 when the Colorado Rockies made their first post season debut, making him one of four men to win an MVP Award and be named Manager of the Year. He was the first manager in Rockies history from 1993-1998 and the Chicago Cubs from 2000-2002. Off the field, since 1978, Don served as host the annual golf tournament in Southern California to raise funds to help find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis which to date has raised millions of dollars. In addition to using the golf tournament in the fight to defeat CF, Don founded the original 65 Roses Sports Clubs (which eventually spread to every major league team), a program that generated tens of millions for life saving medical programs. Don's leadership and respect for the game went beyond the clubhouse, he was a team representative and ultimately the American League Union representative and had a significant impact in some of the most tumultuous times in the modern-day MLB union leadership and contract negotiations, further establishing the depth of his courage to stand up for what's right. Don was also an author and published his book, Don Baylor, Nothing But The Truth: A Baseball Life, with Claire Smith in 1989. He was a member of the following Halls of Fame: California Angels, Colorado State Sports, Texas State Sports, Texas State Baseball, Rochester Red Wings and the International League. Don passed from this earth on Monday, August 7, 2017 with the same fierce dignity with which he played the game and lived his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lillian Baylor. He leaves to cherish his memory and legacy, a loving wife, Rebecca (Becky) of Lakeway, Texas; his son, Don Baylor, Jr. of Austin, Texas; two beautiful granddaughters, Brooklyn and Nola Bee Baylor of Austin, Texas; his brother, Douglas Baylor, Sr. of Austin, Texas; his sister, Connie Baylor-Ferguson (Kenneth) of Cedar Hill, Texas; nephews, Christopher Baylor, Sr. (Andrea) of Plano, TX and Douglas Baylor, Jr.; nieces, Marquette Baylor-Bailey (Keith) of Milwaukee, WI and Kameron Johnson of Cedar Hill, TX; and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, friends and colleagues. Visitation Friday, August 11, 4-5 pm at King-Tears Mortuary. Memorial Service Friday, 6:05-9 pm, Sweet Home MBC (Clarksville). Tribute Service Saturday, August 12, 11:05 am, Greater Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Interment Texas State Cemetery. Funeral services are under the auspices of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church.

A message to Don's family from a lifelong Angel fan:
In the late 70's I was a 15 year old Angel fan from Anaheim who saved his summer lawn mowing money to buy a season ticket for $300. I attended every home game in 1977, a regular "stadium rat" with a few other kids who were as fortunate as I. But what I remember was a particular stretch during that season when Don wasn't hitting well. The press (and fans) were riding him hard during that time, but what I saw has stuck with me for a lifetime. I watched him every day taking extra batting practice in the bullpen batting cage, hours before game time and before regular BP. (I was in the stadium as soon as the gates opened for every game!) His focus and determination struck a chord with that 15 year old kid; that when things get tough you have to get even tougher and work harder in order to overcome the bad times.
I wanted you to know the lifelong lesson he taught a 15 year old fan in 1977, even though I never knew him, save for an autograph or two! He exemplifies to me what all professional athletes should be to kids around the world; a great role model for life!
Keep his memory close to your heart! I have!

To all of Don Baylor's family and many loved ones. My younger son was born at the time the Colorado Rockies were founded. What a wonderful experience to have the ethical, brilliant, and joyful Don Baylor to guide us!!
My sons (now about 24 & 28) were guided by him and the wonderful light he cast.
When we later had to move to Austin because of one son's altitude risk, it helped that it was Don Baylor's home town.
We never had the joy to meet him, yet sort of felt we knew him.
We are bland causianians next to his lovely skin. Yet he was "us" and we always knew we were "him," and will always be.
Bless you dear Don Baylor and RIP.

Becky...I'm so sad and surprised to hear of your loss! Don was the true definition of a "gentleman" and exuded nothing but kindness and class. I will always remember, with great fondness, the amount of generosity and kindness you both showed my family when my mother passed. My dad (passed in 2009) spoke so often about his trip with me to "Spring Training" and that the biggest "highlight" was meeting Don and you. You had such a great man by your side! Don was the perfect choice for the Colorado Rockies 1st manager, for so many reasons. He showed that every day on and off the field! I have thought of you both often over the years and was very surprised to learn that Don battled his illness for so long. I guess I shouldn't be surprised... he was one heck of a competitor with an enormous amount of strength. Becky please know my thoughts and prayers are with you and the Baylor family. In closing may God grant you peace and comfort during this very difficult time.

I had the honor of playing Babe Ruth baseball with Don and Doug at Williams field down by the river in Austin. In those days Don and Danny Covert took turned hitting baseballs near the Lamer St. Bridge. Don was always a competitor but quick with a smile. I watched him through his career with pride because he was a good man first and a great baseball player. May he rest in peace, and may God give his family peace and comfort at this time.

I remember Don Baylor as a member of the Red Sox when I was a kid in the 80's. #25 with no ear flaps on his helmet on that '86 team. In reading about his passing, I realized he was a big advocate for children with Cystic Fibrosis. He did not even have a child or family member affected. My sister has CF & will turn 40 this week which is nothing short of a miracle. Thank you to Mr Baylor & his family for all they've done for those with CF. My thoughts & prayers are with them during this difficult time.

August 8, 2017

I remember going to a game at Yankee Stadium with my son, then about 14, while Don Baylor was with the Yankees. After the game, my son waited patiently near the player entrance and asked the players for autographs as they came out. The only one who stopped and signed his book that day was Don Baylor. Ever since then, he has been in my pantheon of heroes. God bless him, and condolences to his family.

Don Baylor was a truly great man on and off the field. I had Rockies fever, he did every thing possible to bring out the very best in every single player he managed. He personally changed the careers of Dante Bichette and Andres "Big Cat" Galarraga. I had the pleasure of meeting him at a Rockies function and he took time with each of us very excited fans. When Larry Walker was signed and there was a question if Dante Bichette would resign. Don made sure it happened. Since Dante was my favorite Rockie of all time I was extremely grateful he took the time to convince Dante to come back. I even called his wife during spring training when I was freaking out. She was super nice to me and I am so sorry she lost him way to early in life but so glad his suffering from this horrid disease is over. The world could have used more men like Mr. Baylor.

August 8, 2017

This is very sad for me to hear. I played against Don in our first year in professional baseball in the Appalachian League in 1967. He was with the Bluefield, West Virginia Orioles and I was with the Wytheville, Virginia Reds. He was easily recognized as the player we thought was going to make the majors. My prayers are with his Wife and family and to let his Wife know that his passing means that some really good memories in my life from a long time ago, have a piece taken away.

Growing up in Maryland, Don Baylor was one of my favorite players. As a 12-year old kid watching the O's, he was the kind of player I expected all players to be like. I know Mr. Baylor went on to other teams, which made me sad, but I always rooted for him. I will always remember him in his Orioles uniform in Baltimore Memorial Stadium.

I grew up near Donnie and have many fond memories. I have never known another person which such class and dignity. One of my fondest memories was having my Dad walk up to me and some teammates after Babe Ruth League practice (we thought we were hot shots back then) and tell me there is a kid on the next field who makes ya'll look like hamburger, we all just laughed, of course the kid was Don, the rest is history. High school baseball with Donnie was a such a treat. I remember Coach Seale walking up to me and telling me just let the ball hit you or walk cause you can't hit a lick Donnie will drive you in. And I will attest to it, yes he did hit it in the H.E,B. parking lot, only argument was whether it reach 12th street. A Man's Man was Don. You came and left this world a better place for us all. I thank you.

Sincere condolences to the Baylor family and friends. Coach Baylor was a class act on and off the field, a true original. Very fond memories of watching him play while growing up. Tough as nails. I went to school with Don from 7th grade on. He was a good, down to earth guy who thought through things carefully and once he decided on the course he wanted to take, he stuck with it. Respectful, humble, and doggone good looking! He had one giant bunch of groupies cheering him on with each step of his career - Austin High school - '67! He was loved and admired by all. I'm so sorry he's gone, but now that pain is behind him. Those that knew him were nourished by him. My best to family and friend.

I always carry around a little spiral notebook in my back pocket. You never know when youll have to leave yourself a reminder message.

Carrying around a notebook didnt just start. Ive carried a notebook in my pocket literally for decades. The baseball life where youre pulled in multiple directions at the same time didnt allow for forgetting things because you were off doing something else.

Those spiral notebooks can get beat up pretty quickly unless they have a little protection. Starting in the summer of 2000, my little spiral notebooks have sat inside a black leather case. My initials CW are engraved on the outside.

Don Baylor gave me that leather case as a gift.

Thank you for your friendship. You will be sorely missed.

The last time I seen Don was around 1969 and I was pregnant with my oldest Son. He slapped me on my shoulder, really hard, and said, "hang in there little Mama!"

I lived on the East Side with my best Friend Mary Louise (RIP) and we hung out with the Baylors and Fontenettes. Both Families treated us like we were part of them.

My heart goes out to the Families and may God bring a calm and peace unimaginable to the Families.

God bless and much love - Cora Beth - West Texas!

Becky and Don Jr., I first met Don and Jo when they came to Baltimore, I was just a teenager. I began to babysit for Donnie for many years. I still remember my heart break when Don was traded to Oakland, but the next thing I knew I was out in Oakland with them. I grew to love and respect Don like a father. He was kind, gentle and caring. I have so many stories and memories that I can happily look back on. They always bring a smile to my heart to this very day. I last saw Don in April, 1989 in Towson at one of his book signings with his Dad. I will always remember that day. My deepest condolences are sent to you during this difficult time.

I was Don's neighbor at Bonnie Ridge apartments in Baltimore during the early 70''s after my parents divorced. He lived next door to me with his former wife Jo and his son Donnie.

He was the greatest guy! We stayed in touch after he moved to the Angels and when he came to town we often connected. My childhood has some of the fondest memories because of Don's kindness. I remember meeting up with him after a game and he gave me a signed angels ball, I also went into the clubhouse a few times with the Yankees, so cool. He also borrowed our car one weekend and got to spend some quality time with him after an O's Yanks game.

Another memorable experience, was I actually got to play ball on the field with his son Donnie during BP. The last time I got to see Don was in 1997 while he was managing the Rockies.

I'm very sad about his passing and my sincere condolences to his family. RIP Groove

Dear Becky& Family, So sorry to hear of Don's passing. Talked a lot of baseball during his Boston days with Geddy. He was always bigger than life and a true gentleman. Saw him several times when he was with the Angels and talked to him via phone. He will be missed. May God welcome him home and heal your broken hearts.

The Baylor family, I often think of my glory days at Austin High School when Don and I would carry each other up the hill after practice, The days of playing at all the high school here in town and away. We often rode with my parents to away games because neither one of us had a car. I mostly was amazed at the sound of his bat connecting with the ball and shooting like a cannon out of house park. One of his long balls went over the athletic club and very near HEB grocery store. Thank you Don Baylor! I asked God to say hello for me. I also remember Doug and how he was faster than me. Memories will take away the sadness. Don and Gretchen were friends of my sister Eileen Cohen, from New York -children's clothing store. Eileen passed away several years ago. She always spoke highly of both Don and Gretchen. She treasured the signed photo of Don, which he gave her.
RIP Don. Blessings for Gretchen and the family.

My friend Donnie, you will be truly missed,

My deepest condolences and love, goes out to sweet Becky, and your son, and of course, the whole family.

What I loved about Donnie is all of the "Good" that he did for others, and any spare time he had, was devoted to so many different charities.

To name just a few, The cancer society, The head injury foundation, Challenge for children, and of course his main charity he organized himself (65 Roses) which was really, pronounced, Cystic Fibrosis....

I loved playing Golf with Donnie, at many of the different charity events, because Besides being one of the Greatest Baseball Sluugers of all time, He could also swing A golf club and hit the ball to the moon.

Donnie was never too busy, and always happy to sign an Autograph or take a minute for a photo for a fan. He was kind, powerful, gracious, caring, and compassionate, about helping others. He had a Giant Heart, and He was a indeed a wonderful man, and friend.

You will be missed my friend, You were the Greatest!

Mrs. Baylor, Don Jr., and Family, You probably know, because you were there, that Don was an "Oriole" All The Way. We loved him and his style of playing and winning. Reading about his passing is a reminder that we all have our time here on earth, and Don made the most of every minute. We will miss him and wish you and your family God's hand and support as you grieve. Always know, Don is with each of you, forever.
