I consider Jim a great friend, from working together over the past three years. We shared a lot of history... small town Texas roots, and high school football. We also share common interests and concerns... adolescent boys, older parents, a love of the Texas hill country, appreciation for places like Paris, and Istanbul, and deep affection for progressive Texas politics, epitomized by folks like Ronnie Earle. Jim was on my short list for sharing political humor. I will miss him in many different ways. Warmest wishes to Patricia, his children, and his parents.

Dear Tricia, Lisa, Jeremy and Jason,

It is with equally great sorrow that I write these condolences to you on the untimely loss of your husband, father and my good friend and colleague. Over the past 4 years, Jim and I became very close friends and in our work spoke daily (sometimes several times)about work and about family. Jim was a special person, full of life, fun, humor, well read and so knowledgeable about so many subjects. I know how much he loved and cared for all of you and how often he talked about each of you because in that big Texas heart was one of the kindest, gentlest and caring men that I came to know and also care about. I also miss him greatly! Jeremy and Justin; while we have not ever met, know that your father always wanted the best for you and wants you to succeed in life as good persons of character and conscience! He told me this many times!!Remember him for that love and caring that he and your Mom Tricia share for you, the efforts currently underway to assist you in your futures, and also to help her to be strong as well. Lisa, your father also talked many times to me about what you were going to do next in your career always verbalizing his great confidence in you.

Over the past few days many people with whom Jim and I have worked around the world have expressed their deepest sympathies and condolences on his untimely loss and their comments as compliments about him as a person, his knowledge of toxicology and safety assessment and willingness to assist them. these traits and follow through were all common hallmarks of Jim and really reinforce the character of Jim.

While I am unable to be there with you to pay tribute to Jim,please know that not only Jim but all of you are in our thoughts and prayers as we go forward together. That is what Jim would say in that Professorial tone of helpfulness and want too.
