Clarence Swensen Obituary

Clarence Swensen of Pflugerville, a Munchkin in the 1939 motion picture "The Wizard of Oz," died Wednesday. He was 91 and had been in poor health since suffering a stroke in 2005. Swensen was one of nine surviving members of the 125 Munchkins in the classic movie who were honored in November 2007 when a star in their honor was installed on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. "He will be forever in the hearts and minds of his family, many friends and loved ones," Swensen's daughter Donna Geohagan said Thursday on behalf of the family. "And he will be greatly missed by loyal 'Wizard of Oz' fans." Swensen, who grew up in Austin, said it never occurred to him when he was a boy living near Ridgetop School, in what was North Austin during the 1920s, that he would enter show business. He was not allowed to attend public schools until he was 9, he said, because of his size. As an adult, his height was 4 feet 6¾ inches. But in the late 1930s, he joined a troupe called the Stanley R. Graham All Midget Circus, which performed at the State Fair of Texas in Dallas. His job with the circus led him to join a network of smaller-than-normal actors who were in demand for character roles in Hollywood. Eventually, Swensen answered a call from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer casting officers to play a Munchkin for a salary of $700. In a 2007 interview with the American-Statesman, Swensen said the most astonishing experience he could recall during the shooting of the film was the first day he walked onto the expensive, multitiered set the studio had erected to depict Munchkin Land. "It was huge," Swensen said. "And we worked hard — 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. — but it was fun." Swensen left the entertainment business and worked as a civilian radar installation and repair specialist during World War II. After the war, he moved back to Austin and joined the staff of the University of Texas as an electronics technician for 27 years. He later worked for the state as a mail clerk and messenger before he retired in 1980. "I just love it when people talk to me about the picture," Swensen said in 2007. "That movie will never die. It will go on long after the Munchkins have all passed away." Along with his wife, Myrna, he is survived by three daughters: Nancy Setliff of Sugar Land, Carol Hendricks of Pflugerville and Geohagan of Laurel Hill, Fla. Swensen's funeral will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home in Pflugerville. Burial will be in Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery.

As long as there is television or PC's for that matter we will see you as a young marching proud soldier in the Wizard of Oz. All of the baby boomers were blessed in our early lives to see you and this great production. We all pray for this time of innocence when good always overcame evil to come back again. Thank you. The likes of you will never be seen here on God's green earth again.

For Clarence...You were my
favorite Munchkin in the
Wizard Of Oz.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Gramp was a wonderful and caring person. He always had a smile on his face. And has been said many times he never met a stranger. I always enjoyed spending time with Gram and Gramp. They always made me feel like family. I consider them to be my adopted grandparents down here and I will miss Gramp dearly. I love you all and you are in my prayers.

I didn't get to spend much time with Gramp and Gram, but I have a place for them both in my heart for the sweet love they shared. I will never be able to go swimming ever again without thinking about Gramp chasing that darn mouse around the swimming pool! He was a great man, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and I know he will be missed by all. I will probably cry everytime I watch The Wizard of Oz from now on. I hope you all hold on to those wonderful memories that you shared with him and continue to celebrate his life. I love you all and my hopes and prayers are with you!

Myrna and family,
I had the opportunity to meet Clarence at the Wamego Oztoberfest as I was his "volunteer" for the day. The joy he brought to so many many people that day still warms my heart. He was true "Munchkin Love". Thank you for sharing him with all of us Wizard of Oz fans around the world. He will be missed by all who had the opportunity to meet him and especially if you were on the receiving end of one of his special hugs....because you could feel the love it shared.

My sympathy and prayers. Clarence will be waiting over the rainbow for all of us to come home.

I'm so sorry for your loss. The 1st time I ever got to meet anyone from my favorate movie was at the Alamo downtown. I'm greatful for having met him, and I will keep all of you in my prayers.

Short in stature but giant in hart. This was Clarence Swensen (Munchkin Solder). At the end of the movie (The Wizard of Oz) The wizard presented the lion with a hart and said “A hart is not judged by how much it loves – but by how much it is loved.” Clarence Swensen was most assuredly loved as is apparent by this guest book alone. There will be no problems when it comes time for his hart to be judged. Whether you knew him well or you just had the opportunity to shake his hand you can honestly say he will be missed. He was a pleasure just to talk to and be around. I was truly blessed because I ‘am his son-in-law and I will miss him greatly.

I went to high school with Donna Swensen as she was known back then. We were both in the band at John H. Reagan High school.

She was always a very nice and popular person and she loved her parents very much.

I never knew until years later that her father was a famous film star who had appeared in the original "Wizard of Oz."

I wish to send her and her family my deepest sympathies.

Dear Myrna and family,
I got to meet you both in Los Angeles for your star in Hollywood. I am a Wizard of Oz fan and collector and drove from my home in Arizona just to get to meet and be a part of your big event. I have pictures and memories of that event that I will treasure for always. From the stories that your friend and mine Margaret Pellegrini has shared with me over our visits together, you two were very speical people and God must have also thought so by giving you each other to love for 65 years. Clarence will now be your angel in heaven to watch over you Myrna. All my love, Nora Mesa.

My sympathy to Clarence's family and friends. I worked with Clarence during the war and we were on two detached service trips to Pyote and El Paso where we lived in the barracks and did modifications on B-24s and B-17s. Clarence Swensen was one of the nicest human beings I have ever met. I've known both he and Myrna for close to 20 years. They used to both get on an extension on the phone and talk at the same time. There were no two people meant for each other more than they were. He was always happy to be around his fans, and thrilled to be a part of the "families" he became a part of when he went to festivals. When Clarence said: "I love you", he really meant it.

I'll remember him literally running every where he went, joking with Fricke, adoring Myrna, appreciating his fans, laughing from his toes, loving his "Munchkin" friends, giving the best hugs, and honoring the world with the greatest gift he could: Himself.

God Bless The Swensens

Myrna,

My thoughts an prayers go out to you and the family. Clarence was a very personable person and I enjoyed talking to him anytime I got a chance. I remember first meeting Clarence in Liberal, Kansas in 1997. He was surprised that I had a copy of the terror of tiny town and even signed a picture to me from that movie. He will be missed by all of us OZ fans, but we know he is now following the yellow brick road.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Dearest Myrna and Family,
I will never forget the first time I met Clarence. He pulled me down to his height and gave me a big kiss on the cheek, and there was Myrna glaring and smiling not far away from his side. Even when sick, he had such a kind heart and always a smile. We have all lost a dear friend. What a beautiful life and legacy your Clarence, our Clarence, has left behind.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. I did not meet Mr. Swensen personally, but I met one of his grandsons in 1995 when I was attending Austin Community College and he and I were taking an art class together and he gave me (as well as some other classmates of ours) a tour of his grandfather's 2,000 acre ranch in Pflugerville. It was wonderful and his grandson told us the story of how his grandfather had been a munchkin in "The Wizard of Oz". It was really great to hear that story! The movie will definitely live on, and the wonderful memory of Mr. Swensen!

We have lost a very special man, but he will never be forgotten. Myrna, I'm sending you a big hug. Clarence loved to hug.

Clarence was always so happy, sharing his joy with all who knew him. I'll never forget when we would travel the country he would tell the driver, "I don't need that step stool to get out of the van." Then he'd jump right out of the van and look around and just smile.

I remember on one of our "Oz" journeys, we celebrated Clarence's 81st birthday. What a momentous evening that was.

I still consider myself the "Munchkin Wrangler." The memories I have of all my Munchkin Family will remain with me for a lifetime.

Thank you Swensen Family for allowing all of us to share your husband/father/grandfather. He will be missed.

I have so many wonderful memories, and they are all so special. Heaven has another angel looking over us all and sending kisses to us everyday. Goodbye my friend.

Tracy and Clarence meeting and talking about

Tracy and Carol Wallace

February 27, 2009

Mrs. Swensen and family, our prayers go out to you all. Clarence was such a wonderful and kind man. My husband Tracy and I had the priviledge to meet you both just after you returned home from receiving the Hollywood Walk of Fame honor. We are so glad that you were both able to attend the ceremony together. Being able to meet you both is one of our proudest moments and one we will never forget. Thank you for being so kind to all of the Wizard of Oz fans. Clarence will be missed very much and I know someday we will all meet again...somewhere over the rainbow.

Sincerely yours,
