Bobby Mueller recently told his son that he had spent about 160,000 hours of his life at his Taylor barbecue restaurant.
"A typical workweek for him would be a 90-hour week," Wayne Mueller said of his father, the owner and pit master of Louie Mueller Barbecue, who often arrived as early as 4 a.m. on weekdays to prepare meat and side dishes.
"He had a simple formula: put out the best you can every day, and do it consistently," Wayne Mueller said.
Robert Louis Mueller, 69, died in his sleep over the weekend. He was discovered by his wife about 8 a.m. Saturday, Wayne Mueller said. An autopsy is pending.
Bobby Mueller's restaurant, famous for its massive beef ribs and for the nubs of meat provided to customers waiting in line, grew out of a Safeway grocery store that his father, Louie, started in 1936. The Taylor restaurant, which Louie Mueller started in 1949, is considered one of the best barbecue joints in America; Texas Monthly magazine recently named it one of the top five in Texas, and it won a James Beard Foundation Award, a kind of food Oscar, in 2006.
Wayne Mueller said his father held quality and customer service in the highest regard, preferring to run out of food before selling yesterday's meats to his guests. All of the items on his menu were made fresh daily.
"He was dedicated to his principles," Wayne Mueller said. "He made sure to do everything he could to fulfill his responsibilities."
Bobby Mueller was born in 1939. He played football and ran track in high school before leaving Taylor for Texas Christian University, and he spent a year in Korea serving in the military. He came back to Taylor in 1965 to work in his father's restaurant, which he ended up taking over in 1974. Louie Mueller died in 1992.
Wayne Mueller said his father's death was unexpected. He had been in excellent shape and was an avid runner until a few years ago.
"He wore out more shoes that I did sets of tires," Mueller said.
He remembers his dad as a man of very few words who was committed to his community, including organizing peewee football, and was active in supporting local schools.
"In my estimation, he was the strongest man I ever knew," Wayne Mueller said of his father's convictions.
Mueller said he will take over the restaurant.
"My pledge to him was I'd continue it and move it forward," Mueller said. "I never expected him not to be there. I just expected his early mornings to cease."
Funeral arrangements are pending. Mueller said the restaurant will be open today.

I remember as a kid going to Muellers with my father -- he worked for the then Missouri Pacific... Later when Bobby's father (another pit master) passed away, Bobby took over and put his own imprint on the operation...
Was sorry to hear of his passing, but can see that the family has a deep bullpen of others to take over...
Bobby cannot be replaced, but he left things in good hands...

Miss those days when I worked for Missouri Pacific and came to Taylor Tx. Ate at Muellers more times than I can count. Even skipped traditional breakfast so I could show up early at Bobbys and eat brisket and beans for breakfast. Really hated to have Bobby pass away. Can still see Louis sitting on a stool over by the cash register. Remember Fred asking if I wanted gravy with my cue. Hope to get back down there and have some more of that great food.

I must say this was one of the best atmosphere for eating BBQ My son and I have been traveling the state of Texas on the weekends, breaking the state off in sections to hit the 50 top spots of BBQ in Texas Monthly an this will rank around the top. This master chef passed his cooking on to his children and they continue to do BBQ the right way. Will come back again, just for the food & atmosphere as we continue our travels of Texas. Brisket, ribs & sausage were excellent topped off with a slice of cheese.

I guess you can say I grew up on Louie Mueller BBQ. My first rememberence was in the late '40's. After church my grandfather, E.A. Outlaw, would take me to pick up briskit and sausage from the original location adjacent to the Mueller grocery store (across the street from the current location). At that time Mr. Fred Fountain was cooking. My association with Louie Muellers continued through my school and college years and on through my military career. I used to get 50 links of sausage packed in ice to take wherever I was stationed at the time, Hawaii, Georgia, Colorado, and even once to Vietnam. The Mueller family and BBQ tradition is the epitome of fine cooking and BBQ excellence. I am making my pilgamage this year again from my current home in Hawaii and am again planning on bringing the brisket and sausage home.
Thank you Bobby and God Speed to the Big Pit in Heaven.

I watched Diners, Drive Ins and Dives tonight and saw Mr. Mueller on the episode. I did not know he had passed away when I was watching the show. He was funny and so dry. I really enjoyed his part in the show and could tell he really loved what he was doing. I really liked his saying..."retired two years ago when I turned 65" and Guy asked him as Mr. Mueller was hand mixing his sausage, "what do you call what you are doing now?" Mr. Mueller replied..."working." I thought that was just too cute. To his family I pray you keep his memory by continuing to do what he loved. I am going to take a trip to Austin this summer and when I do I plan to come to his resturant.

His passion was evident in his soul and in his food.

I am a true Austinite and I love every bite of Barbeque at Louie Mueller's place. I am truly sorry for the Mueller family's loss. I have been eating there forever. Every mouthful of the brisket and ribs that he labored over was a joy to me! I have never had a bad meal at this establishment. I once went there and parked in front of the restaurant which is what I would normally do and was told by a woman from Hollywood that I could not park there because we are filming a movie. I was not happy. Many years later I asked Bobby if Don Johnson had ever come into his place to eat and he told me that he only came in once to use the bathroom! Are you kidding me! This is the hallowed hall where the best Barbeque is made and Don Johnson never ate there! That's why we love everything Texan and we loved Bobby Mueller. Evertime I come there I feel as though I am entering a church and am blessed to be there. Thank you Bobby for making every visit a religious experience.

I have been a customer of Muellers since 1976. Working for Union Pacigfic Railroad I would on occasion travel to Taylor, always a treat to see Bobby and eat his wonderful BBQ, none better. He always remembered me and would say, "how are thing up north, then say "want your usual? When I heard of his death, I was sadly touched and felt I had lost a friend indeed.

I am sorely going to miss Bobby although I only got to see him and his crew once a year when I visit Taylor. Usually it is "Hi, Herman, how are you? It is good to see you. What can I get you today?", a handshake and I keep moving because there is a line behind me.
I do not know exactly when I first met/knew Bobby. It probably was when I had the distinct pleasure of going with my parents on a Saturday morning to shop in his Dad's grocery store in the 100 block of West 2nd St. This was probably in the late 1940s. I was an underclassman when he graduated from Taylor High in 1957. Well, you know, upper and underclassmen did not normally travel in the same circles. I probably got to know Bobby more when I visited Taylor in between military assignments starting about 1965. My Dad's first question to me during those visits were would you like some barbeque. Well...yeah! Once that was done, a trip to say hello to Bobby and sample some of his cuisine. My last visit was in June/July 2006. I just can not get any barbeque in southern Illinois to match Texas barbeque ala Louie Mueller's. So I get my fix of it along with some "hot guts" and bring some with me when I head back north. I am looking forward to some more when I visit in October of this year for my high school reunion. As I said earlier, I will miss Bobby, no more than his family does. I wish the family well in keeping the eats flowing. I look forward to seeing them when I visit in October. Stop and smell the roses once in a while.

The words legend and icon just naturally come to mind when thinking of Bobby, although those words alone cannot describe the stature he will forever hold. I did not know Bobby personally, but I felt like we were friends. The reason for feeling this way is that every time I visited the best BBQ restaurant around, I felt like I was eating at a friend's house rather than just eating at a restaurant. Bobby was always there, and he was always so friendly to everyone he just made you feel like you had known him for years. God bless Bobby and his family.

To Bobby's Family,
I, too, graduated in 1957 with Bobby. I left Taylor in 1958 and really didn't keep in touch with anyone until 2007 except for a couple of reunions that were always at Bobby's. I had lived across the street from him from 5th until 12th grade, but we never ran around together. However, in Taylor in the 50s everyone was close. He was always friendly and a gentlemen. I talked to Bobby several times in the last year trying to arrange get togethers for our class. He always seemed so happy and laughed a lot. In fact, we arranged a mini reunion in Taylor on a Saturday in August so Bobby could be there and visit and not work. However, at the last minute, it didn't work out for him. I learned so much about Bobby in the last 5 or 6 weeks. I know he will be missed not only by you all, but by the Taylor community. God bless you.

I lived in Taylor from 1959 to 1972, and came to know Bobby as he took over from his Dad, Louie. In later years, occasionally, I would go by Louie Mueller's to check it out. When I would open those screen doors, and whiff that aroma, I would usually see Bobby behind that counter. He would always cut me an end piece of brisket, and have it ready for me when I hit the counter. I always insisted on shaking his hand, and he would hesitate because it was always a bit greasy! He was an All-American guy, and I will miss him!

Dear Trish and Family,
What a mighty heritage Bobby leaves for our town. I pray that the love of God will sustain you as you begin to collect the precious memories of his life dedicated to serving others. This is the Psalm that has been so comforting to me.
Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.
love ya dad!

To Trish and all the family:
A classmate of Bobby's from the Taylor High School Class of 1957, I left Taylor many years ago and returned mainly for class reunions. Through the years Louie Mueller's came to be the first thing that would come into my mind when I thought of Taylor, because our class so often gathered there for so many wonderful times. It's difficult to imagine that the next time I go to Louie Mueller's Bobby won't be there behind the counter as he always was.
Bobby was a rare and special man who meant a lot to all of us whose lives he touched. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to know him, and I will never forget him.
May the God of all comfort hold you in His loving arms...

Trish & Family:
Bobby was my lifelong friend and Best Man at my wedding. I shall miss him very much.
We spent many times together at the Lake skiing and gigging frogs and playing football, baseball & sometimes golfing together as young boys and as we grew older and were separated by distance, but my Mother kept me abrest of Bobby; because she saw him run by her house everyday, and I could hardly wait to get back to Taylor for some of his famous BBQ. He always had a "care" package for me to take back to Lubbock.
I was truly blessed to have known Bobby and have him as a friend. I have only great memories of him.
I have told anyone who would listen that Louie Mueller's BBQ is the best in the world. I remember when Mr. Mueller built the pit on the parking lot behind Diamond Inn and that started me on a lifelong enjoyment of their BBQ. Incidently, Mr. Mueller gave me my first job too, at the Red & White Grocery.
God Bless you all and I shall come see you each time I return to Taylor and continue to enjoy Louie Mueller BBQ and remember Bobby.

What moves through us is a silence, a quiet sadness, a longing for one more day, one more word, one more touch, we may not understand why you left this earth so soon, or why you left before we were ready to say good-bye, but little by little, we begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget.
To LeAnn and Emily and to your Mom Trish, your brothers and the other members of your family including your Dad's sweet grandbabies..

Wow, only 69 years old and Mr. Mueller was always so very kind and generous with that BBQ! It seems that during these times, we often hear from class mates (like myself) and it is my deepest hope that you can find some comfort knowing that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Your Dad is a legend and legends are never forgotten.

To the Mueller Family,
I live in Houston now, but I think about barbecue when I'm here but when I come to Taylor I eat a lot of it. I was so excited when I saw Mueller Barbecue on Drive Inn, Diners and Dives. Just for Taylor and Mueller's barbecue to be recognized was a blessing.
I pray that God will heal your pain and I know that he is in a better place.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Mueller family as well as the staff at LM BBQ. They don't make them anymore like Bobby, he was one of a kind and will be greatly missed.

Our deepest condolences to the Mueller family in this time of sorrow. We always enjoyed our visit to this place for what is to me the finest barbecue in the world. My family's thoughts are with the Mueller's during this trying time.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family. We'll all miss Bobby. I've many fond memories of the food and Bobby and his wit. He produced the best BBQ in the world in my opinion, always consistent, a real treat. Few attain the success of Bobby. A trip to Taylor for BBQ has always been a special treat.

My family has enjoyed the menu at the restaurant for years. My mom would sometimes send me by to pickup pounds of the sausage so she could freeze it and have it on hand whenever her taste buds gave her a hankering for the juicy links. She passed away July 26. Many of our memories of her are 'linked' to your family restaurant.
You have our condolences and sympathy during this time.

Trish--Ah, my friend--My heart goes out to you and your family at the loss of your sweet Bobby. He was a fine man, and you were always right there by his side. Yours was a special marriage. What a legacy Bobby has left behind, not only in Taylor but in so many places and so many hearts. I know that your heart is broken, but I also know your inner strength. Darrell and I have you both in our prayers. Peggy (Sam)

When we set out to produce a documentary film on Texas BBQ, Bobby welcomed our film crew with open arms just as he would welcome any guest to the Smoke-tinted chapel of Texas BBQ. He wore his passion on his sleeve along with the battle stains of the day. His love for his craft was only superseded by his commitment to it. Walking into Louie Mueller was like stepping foot into another world, and Bobby was its dutiful maestro.
It's clear that Bobby passed on the magic of the 'cue to his son John, whom we were also fortunate to get to know.
The world has lost one of its greats. Our prayers go to the entire Mueller family.

My condolences to the Mueller family and friends. Bobby was indeed a BBQ icon in central Texas. Both he and his son John were in our barbecue film, and were very gracious and informative.
