Chuck Gist Obituary

Chuck Gist Surrounded by his family and friends, Chuck Gist passed away on October 1, 2009. Chuck was born in Kansas City, Missouri on March 7, 1950. Chuck studied journalism and art at NTSU and the SMU Academy of Visual Illustration. He worked as a civilian photographer for the Dallas Fire Department and spent many years as a professional photographer and printer. Chuck moved to Austin in 1980 with his future wife, Jan. In 1981 they partnered with long-time friends to open Hut's Hamburgers and in 1995 opened Frank & Angie's Pizzeria. Chuck's passions included photography, movies, music, and travel. He dedicated himself to each interest and often combined them, which generated a great sense of joy and satisfaction for him. As a gifted and recognized photographer, Chuck gravitated toward compelling black and white images of urban life, social dynamics and the people and places of music. His love of travel carried him to many places around the world. Some of his favorite destinations were Paris, San Francisco, New Orleans, New York and Key West. Chuck read and studied and absorbed these destinations. He gained a great understanding of what makes these places so special and grand. New Orleans undoubtedly remains his most photographed city. Those friends and family members, who were fortunate enough to travel with him, will recall a greater and grander adventure because of his presence with them while traveling. At home Chuck enjoyed the companionship and love of their cherished feline family members, Rufus and Macy Gray. It was also at his home where friends and family might be blessed and bestowed with perhaps the greatest of Chuck's gifts... storytelling. His ability to properly craft a fascinating story came with great ease for him and his listeners were usually rewarded with an historical insight, an alternative view, a captivating tale or a humorous anecdote. Many friends counted Chuck's companionship not in years, but in decades... a testament to his undying loyalty and commitment to all those he held close. Seldom to allow a kinship to fade, he truly loved staying in touch with his many friends and was always eager to lend an ear and impart some sincere advice in his own kindhearted and compassionate way. A man of undeniable courage, Chuck fought his difficult battle with liver disease demonstrating great strength and spirit. Seldom complaining and always with a positive attitude, he never lost hope for a brighter, healthier future. To the contrary, he could often be quoted after discussing a litany of health-based woes, as saying "...so it's all good". These words are his gift to us, for it is our lives that have been so blessed with this man who as a brother, a husband, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, and friend has brightened our lives and charmed our world with his big heart and his generous caring manner. So yes, as we speak of our beloved Chuck and his undeniable impact on us, we must say... it's all good. Chuck is survived by his dedicated and loving wife, Jan; his adoring daughter, Rachel and husband Ray and their sons, Austin and Manny Charles; his brother, Mark and wife Kathy and their children Katy and Sam, wife Lori; his brother, Craig and wife Theresa and their children, Heather, Amber, Danielle, Brianna, Madison, Chloe, and Hayden Charles; his sister, Shawn and her daughter Taylor; cousin, Jim Belman and wife Bonnie; and many lifelong friends. A memorial service to celebrate Chuck's life will be held at Frank & Angie's at 508 West Avenue, Austin, Texas on October 25, 2009 from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. The family wishes to send thanks to Dr. Mark Levy and Dr. Imtiaz Alam and their staffs for the many years of compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Liver Foundation at www.liverfoundation.org.

Though I never met or knew Chuck Gist, I wish I had. My wonderful departed maternal grandfather, Archie Gist, Silsbee, TX was just this kind of person. I choose to adopt Chuck into our family.

Chuck, the memories of you will live on and on.

My condolences to Jan and your children.

I worked for Chuck and Hutch for 7 years. Chuck was a boss that became a true friend. I've never meet anybody with such a knowledge of film, books, music, and the arts. He opened my eyes to numerous authors, musicians, and artists. Yet, he always wanted to know what I liked as well. I find myself telling stories of his exploits to my friends. I'll never forget his story of the photographer Johnny Donnels. Chuck was a gracious friend who always made me feel welcome, after I moved on. I will miss you Chuck! Yet, your stories I will pass on.

My times at church (that is what we called it back in the 80's) was some of fondest memories at Hut's with Tex Thomas and the Danglin Wanglers! and Angela and all the other artists who played there. Hutch and Chuck were the gracious Hosts at Hut's. Listening yesterday to everyone speak about him was very touching and so glad I took the time to go there. He will be missed! My thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Jan and his family.

I worked for Chuck & Hutch at Huts in 1989. I worked with the guys for 4 years and they became good friends & influences on my life. One of my favorite pictures I have of that time in my life, was one Chuck took of me under the Huts sign on the bar. I still have it to this day & relish it now more than ever. That was a great time in my life, working & talking with Chuck & Hutch. All the good friends I met & still have. Those late nights with Tex Thomas & all the guys playing those wonderful tunes. Hamburger Happy hour. Longhorn Football. These days will be missed, as well as you, Chuck. God Bless. You will be missed!

Chuck was my boss at F&A's for a few years in the mid-90's. Man, he could be a bit of a rascal to work for, but I loved sitting and talking with him about movies and books and music. He turned me on to so many great writers and directors and musicians. We lost touch when I moved out of the states, but I know he was proud of me for the things I am doing. When I became a teacher, he told me it was a noble profession and that meant a lot to me. When my family would visit Austin and come to the restaurant to eat, Chuck and Hutch always took the time to come over and talk and treated them as family. I loved to listen to Chuck talk about his interests because he did it with such conviction and I find myself doing the same with younger people I meet. I always felt like he looked out for me and celebrated my accomplishments. I will miss you Chuck.

Our friendship had many layers through the years beginning in 1968. You definitely lived life to the fullest and made sure that all around you did too. We certainly had good times on Longview Street. Through the years, I knew I could always count on your friendship no matter how long it had been. I will miss you Chuck!

I met Chuck through mutual friends back in the late 60's. A few yrs. later,Chuck helped me in my business with some awesome fashion photography that we used in the Dallas Morning News. We became good friends over working together, lots of music, the arts, movies, food and lots of other passions. I always looked forward to seeing him when I was in Austin. His big smile, his great personality and his generosity will be truly missed. Through his struggles with his health, he never complained-he was strong and courageous. Chuck’s memories will always be with me. My sincere condolences to Jan, Rachel and the entire Gist family.

Chuck was my first boss when I moved here, so his distinctively dry sense of humor looms large in my personal cityscape. I saw him and Jan only occasionally over the last few years, but it was always a treat, and it always reminded me of what I love about Austin. My heart goes out to Jan and the rest of Chuck's family. I feel lucky to have known him and wish there were more like him . . . but of course, there aren't any more like him.

We are saddened to hear of the loss of one our great Austin brothers. Chuck was a darling soul and you just felt happy when you saw his [always] smiling face. He was a dear, generous, fun and extremely cool soul. Our love goes out to Jan as they were a darling couple and a joy to be around. We feel very blessed having had the opportunity to share some time with Chuck.

What a testiment to Chuck's life that he was loved by so many and touched so many lives. My husband and I were on the receiving end of his generosity and hospitality more times than I'd like to admit when we frequented Huts back in college. He never failed to take the time to come over and make us laugh and truly knew how to put everyone at ease! He was a good man! We will be praying for your family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Gist family. Chuck was a wonderful person who always had a smile and such a great outlook on life. His "little" brother Mark and I were good friends in high school, so I spent many an hour around their house, always enjoying the visits with their entire family. Always gracious, always kind. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself with the rest of us. We are all better for it.

I spent almost a decade working at Hut's before I left to go travelling. I would not be the man that I am today if Chuck hadn't taken the chance of hiring me on the spot the day that we first met. For that I will be eternally grateful.

You made your grandchildren laugh and smile. And you were a great grandfather. I will always remind my children of what you thought was important about entertainment and life. They both got to go to their first movies with you. I will make sure they will see the world. You were easy going and went out of your way to accept me into the family.

It's hard to say goodbye to someone I truly looked up to and respected. He was a wonderful brother, whom I admired and loved. He always had something positive to say, even though he struggled courageously with his own illness. Jan, just want to say Thank You for your loyalty and love, patience, and being a wonderful wife to Chuck. I'm going to miss his in depth and humorous stories he shared with me. Good Bye Big Brother, I'll always Love Ya Craig

You're the reason why I always looked forward to going to HUT's. God bless you and your family, dear sir. I anticipate chatting with you again some day. Thank you.

Though I didn't know him personally, I have eaten at Hut's many times. My heartfelt condolences to the family. And to the person who wrote the obituary, well done. You wrote something beautifully done that gave me the essence of his soul, and a wish to have been priviledged enough to have heard one of his stories. He must have inspired you greatly and it shows in the quality of your writing.
