David Everett Obituary

David Everett 1936 - 2010 David Wilmot Everett, formerly a longtime Austin resident, died on July 30, 2010, at his home in Erongarícuaro, Michoacán, Mexico, after a long struggle with Parkinson's disease. David was born in Conroe, Texas, on November 1, 1936, to his father Wilmot Everett, a hardware store owner and his mother, Elsie Everett, a homemaker. David attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a degree in biology in 1959. David was multi-talented - a writer and editor, a musician who toured Europe playing the piano, a droll storyteller, a gifted teacher, and a friend for all seasons. In Austin, he was a key member of Austin Community College's News and Information Services staff. He won national Toastmaster awards. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 1985. He retired from Austin Community College in 1996 and moved to Mexico with his husband Charles Dews. David and Charles lived in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico City, Pátzcuaro, and Erongarícuaro. David was predeceased by his parents and is survived by his beloved Charles of Erongarícuaro, his adoptive Mexican family, Juan and María Calderón Castillejo and their son Fernando David, also of Erongarícuaro, and two sisters and two nephews in the Conroe, Texas, area, and many friends. Friends are assembling a memorial book of David's writing. David was buried in the village cemetery of Erongarícuaro the day following his death. David and I were friends for forty-six years before his death. He was a great friend and I miss him. As young men we had many fine adventures. For example, he and I were in Russia in 1967 for the fiftieth anniversary of the Russian Revolution. David was a raconteur of the first order. He is missed.
