Joseph Nanus Obituary

Joseph McCord Nanus, Sr. December 17, 1935 - July 15, 2007 Joseph McCord Nanus, Sr. passed away on July 15 after a lengthy but fierce battle with cancer. He was born in Fort Worth, Texas on December 17, 1935. His family moved to Dallas, then the Rio Grande Valley. After graduating from McAllen High School he joined the army and served for three years. He then attended the University of Texas, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology. While employed by the Texas Department of Health Bureau of Radiation Control he attended the University of Oklahoma and earned a Master's Degree in Radiological Health. He retired from TDH with 28 years of service. Following retirement Joe entered private practice as a consultant in Medical Physics for the Seton Hospital system in Austin, Texas. In 2003 he moved permanently to Pagosa Springs, Colorado with his wife Janice, and three West Highland White Terriers. Survivors include his loving wife Janice; mother, Bessie Adele Nanus; his beloved children, Joseph Nanus, Jr. and wife Terri Rose, Patricia Ireland and husband Kelly Ireland; sister, Joanne Foster; and numerous nieces and nephews. He treasured three grandchildren: Alex Nanus, Grace Nanus, and Sloan Ireland. Joe was very active in the Austin community. He served in various capacities in the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, St. George's Episcopal Church, and the Optimist Club. He loved singing, acting, and playing bridge. But most of all he loved to serve the Lord. Services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday, July 27 at St. George's Episcopal Church, 4301 N. IH 35. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to St. George's Episcopal Church or The Westie Foundation of America, 33101 44th Avenue N.W., Stanwood, WA 98292.
