Sammy Oates Obituary

Sammy Marvin Oates After a brave and difficult struggle, Sammy Marvin Oates succumbed to complications from prostate cancer and died peacefully on Wednesday, October 6, 2010. He was born December 2, 1938 in Trinity, Texas, the younger of two boys born to Jake Oates and Mae Gillaspie Oates. Sammy grew up in Austin where he attended Texas School for the Deaf. He was a star in almost every sport on campus. In 1958 he broke a record in Shot-Put, rushing an average 10.1 yards per carry, his record still stands to this day. He beat the odds, stayed humble and learned to love richly. He was a football star at TSD. He entered Hardin Simmon University in Abilene, Texas. After several trials at NFL team, he played semi-pro teams. He married Brenda Simpson on November 24, 1962. Sammy is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Brenda Oates; daughters, Toni and Jodi; son, Sammy, Jr. and his significant other, Priscilla Schultz; daughter- in-law, Deb Kuglitsch; and six grandchildren. An avid bass fisherman and hunter, he had several bass and deer trophies displayed at home. Above all, Sammy was a humorous and most loved man full of smiles we will ever remember. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, October 10, 2010 at Texas School for the Deaf Auditorium at 1102 South Congress Avenue. The family would like send a heartfelt thank you to Hospice Austin for their wonderful care of our loved one. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in honor of Sammy to the Texas School for the Deaf Foundation, or the TSD Booster Club, 1102 South Congress Avenue, Austin, Texas 78704. Condolences may be made at www.cookwaldenforestoaks.com.

I know that you have suffered a profound loss through Sammy's death, but please find some comfort in knowing how many lives he touched in his very special way. Swimming trips with the Austin Aquatic Club were made more memorable because of Sammy and the way he related to each of us. My prayers are with each of you for comfort, grace and peace. I just received a notice of the passing of Sammy. I remember him as the best high school athelete I ever knew. I played against him at San Marcos Academy. Sammy was always outstanding and I have spoken of him often since I last saw him in 1957. 53 years ago and I still remember him. I know all his family and friends will miss him greatly. May God bless and keep you all at his side.

Sammy.. What can I say about this man? Just ask his fellow fishermen.. Just ask TSD folks, Just ask people from the Deaf Senior Citizen or the good folks from the Deaf club, just ask the opponents he played against during his heydays, just ask his family, kids and grandkids, just ask God from above.. We all can say many good things about this cheerful man. May he pass that cheerfulness among us all. We will remember you always in our heart.

Sharing the loss with you family, I am sharing a story that Sammy had shared with me some time ago. I was a chairperson of TSDAA Hall of Fame, he came to me and said, you know all the honors and trophies that I have received all these years mean nothing to me but this is my best honor and I thank you to give me this honor. I am very proud of TSDAA HoF honor. That had brought me tears typing this. God bless you, Sammy. Family of Sammy, you can rest now since he is in better place. Being a Texan like Sammy, I am proud to be his fellow Texan!

My sincerest sympathy to the family. Sammy Oates was truly one of a kind. He was a wonderful mentor to kids and imparted great lessons about life that can be learned on football fields, track fields, and the lakes that he fished from. Sammy invariably would light up a room with his gentle demeanor and his winning smile. Truly there is a special place in His mansion for Sammy. He was never boastful; humble to the end. That is a man for you. A wonderful one. Jennifer Berg Howell/Betty Berg

Dear Brenda & Family, I was extremely saddened to hear of Sammy's passing. He and I were childhood friends and spent many hours over at Stacy Swimming Pool, exploring the creek below Travis Heights Elementary School, and playing tag with all the neighborhood kids. Sammy will always be remembered for his quick smile, his tremendous athletic abilities, and strong character. Please accept my most sincerest condolences on this sad occasion.

October 10, 2010

I join Eddie Fleming (of St. Ed's) in remembering Sammy Oates as the finest athlete against whom our school played(Concordia High School from the north side of Austin). I especially remember his infections smile ... and a trip to the track meet in Waco (?) on which Concordia and TSD shared a "yellow hound" school bus. On another track and field occasion, while competing in the shot put, Sammy went over to the dash competition and won the 100-yard-dash. Upon returning to the shot put competition, he "asked" what the current long toss was. When informed, he promptly placed the shot in his left hand and "put" it farther than the current leading throw ... then transfered the shot to his right hand and "put" it about ten feet farther than he did with his left hand. He then "complained" because the officials would not give him both the first and second place ribbons - first for his right-hand effort; second for his left hand effort.

My breath was taken away this morning as I saw the picture of Sammy in the obituaries this morning. Tears streamed down my face as I recalled the many, many memories that I have of Sammy when we both swam for Austin Aquatic Club. I was so young - but I see now only 8 years younger than Sammy, and I absolutely thought that he was the most wonderful person I had ever met. I vividly remember the bus trips to swim meets, and I would sit in the back of the bus and ask Sammy to teach me sign language. I think now that I really just wanted to be near such a hero to me. I might have been 8/9 years old.
Your husband, dad, granddad, friend, etc. was a very special man. I know that you know this, and I am sure that I knew it 50+ years ago. I cherish my memories of Sammy, and I grieve for your loss.
God love you all,

Peggy
