Dr Walter's was my physician and did hand surgery once. He was the best. Sorry to hear of his untimely passing

Simply put, Dr. Walters was the best surgeon/doctor I have ever interacted with. These days, you rarely feel like your doctors truly care about you and Dr. Walters was the clear exception to this. I was his patient in 2005 and again in Sept of 2010 and he was so amazing at drawing pictures to explain a situation as well as making sure you understood the upsides and downsides to any procedure. His patience, wit and knowledge not only eradicated my fears, but also made me infinitely confident with his abilities. With that, I want to extend my deepest sympathies to his family and close friends. He was someone I can honestly say it would have been a real treat to know outside of the doctor's office. He will be truly missed. They broke the mold after him.

He was what surgeons were meant to aspire to but rarely can be at the same time; professional, knowledgable, caring and very human. He had a sense of wit and brevity that meant you understood your options in a few moments without panicking. I will miss my few interactions with him greatly and hope the family recognizes what a rare and magical individual he was.

I have enjoyed my visits with Dr Walters over the years, took my son to him as a little boy and then when grown, such a pleasant man and Doctor. He always took the time to make sure you understood your condition. He called you in from the waiting room, took you to your room, took your x-ray and then developed it himself. He would draw exactly what he felt the problem was and always made light of his skill if you mentioned it. My thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family, who shared him with this Austin community for so long, he was a saint of a man. Thank you.

It is with a very heavy heart I send the Walters Family my deepest sympathy. Dr. Walter was one in a million and his legacy is one you all are very proud of I am sure. I actually saw him on November 8th. at about 4:30 pm and had a great visit with him and for that I am grateful. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his Family that he loved so much, I will remember him always as he was a great person and a wonderful doctor. I hope all the memories you have will give you much comfort as you mourn your loss. Remember the love in your heart as it is much stronger than death and time will make this less painful. Dr. Walters I will miss you always, you are and will always be an inspiration to me.

I can only echo what everyone has said: great doctor, great bedside manner, great drawings, patient with his patients, kind, considerate...he took care of three different hand incidents for me--and only operated twice! Pretty good for a surgeon! You could tell he loved his family--but the man had a capacity for love that is greater than most folks I know. My condolences to the family...he touched so many lives that he lives on in all of us.

I have known Bob Walters since I came to Austin in 1994; we would visit in the surgery lounge on Friday mornings or Saturdays waiting for cases to start. Bob was warm and reminded me of my tall midwestern uncles ( my parents are from Chicago). I would talk about my young daughter and he would speak of his children's progress and would often speak of his wife. I admire a man who is proud of his wife and family and values them. Bob has been a wonderful physician, as so many have recounted, but his love for family made me admire him even more. I will truly miss his warm greetings and willingness to answer questions about sore fingers or wrists, but I am sure heaven holds a place for such a dear husband, father and man. May he rest in the Lord's peace.

Of all the doctors I have visited in my life, Bob Walters is the most memorable. He was a skilled surgeon who enjoyed his craft but, more importantly, he radiated a genuine warmth and concern for his patients as human beings. This is something quite rare and extraordinary in this day and age. He embodied the "bedside manner" that every physician should strive to emulate. What a prince of a fellow!

Dr. Walters was an exceptional human being and physician. His compassion, ability, and communication skills placed him in the highest echelon of medicine. His drawings to educate each patient about their condition and treatment are unparalleled. I have referred many patients to Dr. Walters over the years, and he has always garnered respect and admiration for his exceptional bedside manner. Our community will greatly miss him...

I have little to add to all the wonderful things already said by others. Dr. Bob operated on my wife, Irmgard, three times (the latest of which was this past August) and he was always the same, jovial Dr. Bob. He treated my wife and our entire family as personal friends that he'd known for a long, long time. We will miss him and the gentle care he so lovingly gave my wife. Our sincere and heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Walters and his entire family.

Our heart and prayers go the Walters family. Dr. Walters was a great physician and a true gentleman. Like Dr. Chase stated Bob was never too busy to add another patient or answer any of my questions. I have referred alot of patients over the years to Bob and never had one single negative feedback. Patients appreciated the time he spent with them as well as the pictures he drew for them explaining their options. Austin has lost a great physician.

Never have I been so well-treated by a physician. His caring and kind ways were amazing, and he took the time to explain everything in a way that made it easy to understand. I was very saddened to learn of his death, and I hope that his family will forever know what a difference he made in the lives of his patients.

I learned of Dr. Walter's death yesterday and was very saddened. He was truly a remarkable physician. He had a way of making patients feel comfortable and at ease as they faced surgery. He had a joy about him you couldn't help but notice. My sincerest condolences are extended to the family. The world's brightness is diminished a bit in his absence.

Walter Chase, M.D.

November 17, 2010

I met Dr. Walters a year after he opened his practice in Austin. I was immediately impressed with his depth of knowledge and compassionate approach to patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis and other similar diseases. Over the years I had referred scores of patients to him and every one of them was impressed with his thoroughness and extraordinary level of care and quality of his work. Dr. Walters was never too busy to answer a question or make room for another patient in his busy schedule. He was an outstanding physician and human being and the medical community is profoundly diminished by his loss.

November 16, 2010

He will be missed and was one of a kind. He cared for his people, from the heart. I met Dr Walters during a hand problem when a friend recommended him. He took the time to draw all the bones in the hand and explained what they were. I very rarely meet a Dr. that is not in a hurry to see the next person. To Dr. Walters I was important at that moment. He will be missed. Brenda DeLancy -Young

The Walters' family has always been our example of a family filled with love. We were so impressed with you as parents when we provided educational support. A year ago I saw Bob professionaly when I had hand problems. Again, he was warm and bragging about his beloved family. You are all in our thoughts.

We met Dr. Walters in 1988 when our daughter, Sunni, needed surgery after an auto accident. She was not yet 18 and terrified. He calmed her fears (and ours) and made her laugh. When my husband needed surgery this summer we selected Dr. Walters again. Even after 22 years he was a kind and wonderful memory. We are deeply sorry for the entire family but I feel the deepest regret for the loss to his grandchildren and what all they will miss out on without him sharing in their lives. God Bless each of you.

I will miss Dr. Walters tremendously, and I don't think many people can say that about their surgeons. He was such a kind and gentle man. I was already cherishing the drawings that he made for me of my hands, and now they will be framed in a special place. My best goes out to his family. Janet Kastner

May the support of God's loving arms comfort the Walter's Family during this difficult time. Dr. Walter's was my "Angel" in relieving me from my carpal tunnel pain. Dr. Walters showed care and concern for all his patients. He will be missed greatly.

I'm very sad about Dr walters passing. He operated on my hand and wrist 2 years ago and I will remember his kindness and concern for me. May God comfort his family. He was truly a great man and healer. He will be missed.

Bob Walters was an extraordinary human being, and how honored I am that he was able to step into my life for a short while to relieve my carpal tunnel pain. He was an old-school physician, who personalized everything. How surprised I was to get a phone call from him the day of my surgery telling me that he was running a little late! Physical therapy with Bob was like taking a trip back in time as he went from patient to patient with the physical therapist at his side, making his rounds. He was taken way too soon. I can only imagine that the angels grew tired of his absence and had to fetch him home again ahead of time. You will be missed on Earth, Dr. Bob!--Lana Dieterich

I cannot believe that Dr. Walters is gone. I can still hear his gentle but clear voice. He was one of the absolute best physicians I have ever encountered. I feel so honored and privileged to have known him and to have had him "fix" my hand. He was brilliant and humble at the same time; a giant of a human being. I will miss visiting his office. His staff was as great to work with as he was. I didn't know his family, but I saw the pictures. I know he loved you dearly. Bob, you left us all too soon!

It's difficult to find the words to express the sadness in my heart over the loss of this wonderful man. He provided exceptional care during my many years of surgeries and rehab. He always had the sweetest smile, the best hugs and the silliest jokes I've ever heard. It's rare to find a doctor who has such a genuine concern for his patients. I will miss him greatly but will take comfort in the knowledge that he is now in the presence of the Great Physician.

Respectfully,

I saw Dr. Walters last week so he could update me on the newest procedures for my problem. It was more like going to see a good friend that knows everything about hands than seeing a "doctor". He took him time, explained, joked, and those hand-bone drawings he did, unbelievable!! He even drew red dots on my hands to help me identify my pain. I barely knew him and I'm sad.

We were both shocked and saddened to learn of Dr. Walter’s death. Dr. Walter’s performed hand surgery on both of us. He was exceptional, if not unique, among physicians – extraordinarily competent (among the best in the country) yet exceedingly caring to his patients. When visiting with him in his office, he gave the full measure of his time and attention. His explanations of your problem, accompanied by his drawings of your hand ,are legendary in the Austin community. When performing surgery he spent an inordinate amount of time with his patients in both the pre- and post-operating rooms. When he knew that we were in a therapy session, he would walk down the hall to check on us.
When Dr. Walters was unavoidably late, even by a few minutes, he would telephone to let you know and to apologize. How many other doctors do that? Indeed, if he were late as often as not it was because he was called to an operating room to resolve a predicament in which another surgeon found himself. Over the years we have met and spoken to numerous of his patients (just about everyone in Austin who has had hand problems). Without exception they were quick to shout his praises. So too were the hospital personnel with whom he worked.
Austin has lost one of its finest.

My condolences to the family of Dr. Walters, Bob as he asked me to call him. I still have the drawings he drew for me of my trigger thumbs. He was a very caring person, very cheerful and polite and the only doctor who cared enough about me to give me his personal cell phone number and asked me to call any time if I had any questions or experienced extreme pain. He was so in-love with his wife. He lit up like a Christmas tree when he spoke of her. My prayers are with you all in this most difficult time.

It is with great sadness that I read about Doc Walters. I was his patient for only a short while but I wanted his family to know that I will never forget him. I have never seen any doctor who did everything, from start to finish, by himself. He checked me in, examined me, took the x-rays, read the x-rays, drew pictures for me and acted as though he had all the time in the world to explain what he thought might be going on. As it turned out, the problem originated in my elbow and he graciously and without hesitation, sent me over to Dr. Michael Loeb who took great care of me. I felt as though I was dealing with a small town doctor when I was with Dr. Walters. He was just the sweetest man and so proud of his family - as evidenced by the pictures of them everywhere you looked. I know his passing leaves a huge hole in your lives. God bless you all.
