Jackson Reid Obituary

Dr. Jackson B. Reid Jackson Brock Reid, 90, died on January 18, 2012. He was Professor Emeritus in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin. Jack was loving, generous and unfailingly kind. His family will miss him greatly. Born in September 1921 to Alexander Mack Reid and Ann Orr (Brock) Reid in Honea Path, South Carolina, Jack graduated The Citadel in South Carolina, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After earning a Ph.D. at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1951, he joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin as an assistant professor. He served as chairman of the Ed Psych department for many years. He also served as Vice President, Psychological Research Service 1955-1964; Vice President, Educational Development Corp. 1964-1985. Jack's interests included economics, politics, UT Longhorns football, boating and swimming with family and friends at his home on Lake Austin. Jack was predeceased in 2008 by his beloved wife of 61 years, Avis Reid. He is survived by his son, Jules Long of Virginia; daughter, Barbara Youngberg and son-in-law Robert Youngberg of Austin; nephews, Mack Harrison of South Carolina and David Harrison of Washington State; sister-in-law, Betty Lindsey, PhD of New York City; four grandchildren, Nathanael Long of Paris, France, Teresa Hvizdos of Driftwood, Geneva Grant of Virginia, Claes Youngberg of Virginia; six great- grandchildren, Jackson Hvizdos, Annalea Hvizdos, Samuel Hvizdos, Christine Grace Hvizdos, Jacob Grant, Abigail Grant; and dear friend and caregiver Arnold Ugarte. A memorial for Jack and celebration of his life will be held at 7 p.m., Thursday, January 26, in the parish hall of St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church, on Post Oak Dr. at the intersection with Shetland Rd. in Dripping Springs. Memorial contributions may be made to the Reid Educational Psychology Fund, Educational Psychology Department, University of Texas at Austin or to the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation, 125 Broad Street, 18th Floor, New York, NY 10004.
