(12/10/2002) John E. Powell Aug. 24, 1934 - Dec. 8, 2002 John Powell passed away peacefully Sunday December 8, 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. John was born in Durant, OK, to John Franklin and Ellen Pearl Powell. John graduated from Vernon High School in Vernon, TX. He has lived in Austin since 1953 when he came to attend the University of Texas. His life's work was associated with retail businesses including Scarbroughs, J- Winn Powell, John Powell's Carriage House, and The Powell Collection. He was currently serving as Membership Director of the Texas Retailer's Association. John was a faithful Christian and was a member of Windsor Park Baptist Church, Hyde Park Baptist Church, and most recently, First Baptist Church of Georgetown. He served the Lord in many ways. His favorite ministries were singing in the choir and greeting visitors and friends at church. He is survived by Ann, his wife of forty-eight years; his son, John Davis and his wife, Jessie Amanda; and beloved grandchildren, John Walter, William Davis, and Gwendolyn Ann. He is also survived by his sisters: Elizabeth Morelan, Gordonville, TX, Christina Tranthom, Carlsbad, NM; Shelia Turner, Kingston, OK and brothers and sisters-in-law, Harry and Ruth Davis, Beloit, WI, Nell Davis, Bellevue, TX, Gowin and Dawn Davis, Wichita Falls, TX; and many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to express it's appreciation to the many friends and neighbors that have provided support during this difficult time. They also wish to thank Demetrius Loukas, MD and staff of Southwest Regional Cancer Center in Central Austin and Georgetown for their compassionate care. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 11, 2002, at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2002, at Hyde Park Baptist Church in Austin with Reverend Joe Carrell and Dr. Jim Haskell officiating. Interment services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2002, at Bellevue Cemetery in Bellevue, Texas, with Reverend Darius McKay officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First Baptist Church of Georgetown Building Fund.
