Charles ROBERTS Obituary

ROBERTS, Charles Andreas
Charles Andreas Roberts, owner of Enchante, Austin, Tx., passed away on December 8, 2015. Born June 16, 1954 in Columbus, Ohio, Charles was preceded in death by his father, Col. Wagner H. Roberts, USAF Ret. He is survived by his beloved daughter, Alexandra of Arlington, Va., mother, Marianne Rowley of Green Valley, Az., half-brother Peter Hoffman of Tucson. Charles spent his teenage years in Surfside, SC where he developed a deep love for the beach. He attended Socastee H.S. and earned his degree in English Literature from the University of South Carolina. After graduation, he proudly served 4 years in the US Army before becoming a teacher in Arizona. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to Austin and the founding of Enchante, a shaving and fragrance boutique, where he spent over 20 years devoted to his clients, near and far. He was passionate about wet shaving as well as the products and techniques he developed. Charles graciously shared his knowledge with anyone who took an interest. He was a voracious reader and his most enjoyable times were with friends and family discussing history, politics, economics and philosophy.

Friends are welcome at Enchante, One American Center, Austin, Tx on Monday, Dec. 21 from 4-6 pm to share stories and remembrances of Charles. In his memory, donations can be made to the Veteran's organization of your choice.

I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has shared their beautiful memories and sentiments on this remembrance page. It is incredibly touching that even 5 years after his passing, my dad’s memory lives on in the people he touched along the way. Like anyone who has lost a loved one, there is so much I wish I could say to him. Most importantly, I wish he could see the profound impact he had on so many people. He was a man of deep thought and intellect, and a genuine heart who found the most joy in meaningful human connection. One theme that is evident through each post below, is that he truly loved to teach. Be it English, Economics, political theory or his beloved Shaving, he found the greatest joy in sharing knowledge.

Thank you for being a part of my dad’s life and supporting him in doing what he loved. I am so grateful that his life was filled with amazing people, and it’s comforting that his memory lives on.

Please feel free to reach out at any time.

With love,
Alexandra

Mr Robert’s was my English teacher for 2 years (completely by accident).
My Freshman year I was assigned his class and in the first 5 minutes, I realized I was in Sophomore English. I was too afraid to speak up. After the first day, I was inspired. I told him after class I was not in the right room and he asked “Do you want to stay? I’ll make it happen”.
So as a Freshman, I took Sophomore English. It was the most motivating class I took. I was never much of an academic and Mr. Robert’s motivated me to be my best.
The following year, I faced a dilemma. I was a Sophomore missing Freshman English in my transcript. Mr. Robert’s happened to be assigned Freshman English and we spent another year together. He was always the most engaging and enthusiastic teacher I had the privilege to learn from.

I moved away after my sophomore year.

I never forgot about him.

I returned to Tucson after he left teaching and visited his store every time to say “Hi” He was the same outgoing personality as he was teaching.

Always went above and beyond. Always made you feel like the most important person in his life at the moment.

Fast Forward.....

I was sitting in the DFL airport and remembered he had moved to Texas. I tried to look up his store to see if we could make a connection while I was there and his obituary popped up. I was devastated. We had kept in contact several years after graduating high school and talked on the phone, sometimes for more than an hour at a time. My life is changed for the better as a result of his teaching and inspiration. I truly believe my life took a turn after his belief and confidence in my potential.
I think of him often....amazing in every way.
He was a catalyst in my life changing gears and feeling a confidence that others had not provided me.
Among many things, I am fortunate to be an educator in Leadership Development and every time we discuss an influential leader in our lives, I talk about Charles Roberts.

Love you Mr. Robert’s. Thanks for all the confidence you gave me as a young unguided student.....

Mr. Robert’s was by far the most caring and loving teacher I ever had. That includes 169 credits of undergrad work and 54 masters degree credits. He would mail me homework my freshman year of college to “keep me sharp”. I would complete it and mail it back. One time while I was home from college I went to visit him at school. His class was taking an exam that day and he invited me in to sit in the front of the classroom. Then he handed me the exam and made me take it. I got an A. Haha I was sad to hear of his passing because of all the others that will never get the experience of learning from this amazing man.

I took Mr. Roberts' English class my freshmen year in high school and was a teaching assistant for him during my sophomore year. He had a profound impact on my education. His passion for English came through in his teaching and the amazing stories he shared with us. I learned the meaning of academic rigor because of him and his faith in my academic skills motivated me to go on to take honors English classes and AP history. I realized I wanted to be a teacher because of him and I strive to be the type of teacher he was. Although I studied elementary education, I am now an English teacher in Japan. I found the lessons on latin and greek bases and suffixes to have been very interesting and helpful. Never did I realize how useful they would become in my career. I am deeply saddened to only just be hearing about his passing today as many of my fellow Rincon students were discussing who they thought the best teachers were and Mr. Roberts seems to have had an overwhelming impact on SO many students. I will miss him but I will also cherish the memories I have of him. I hope his family knows how big of an impact this teacher had on the students he taught.

Here it is 2020
and I am just finding out that Charles has passed.
I just realized several years ago that his store wasn't in business and assumed he moved.
So very sad as this man was amazing and passionate. Barely knew but will never forget.

I had no idea that he passed. He was one of my 2 favorite teachers at Rincon. I have looked for you periodically over the years with no luck till today. My heart is genuinely sad. RIP Mr Roberts.

I am shocked to hear that Charlie, as I knew him has died. We were together for two years in college. I drove across country with him to Arizona. What in the world could have taken him away so early? He helped shape the person I am today. I am glad to hear that he has a daughter. She should be so proud of him. He was a wonderful person that gave a lasting impact on everyone he met.

I just found out today about Charles' passing and I'm in shock. I worked with Jean and Charles at Enchante in the Brodie Oaks shopping center and I would stop by every couple of years to visit with Charles at his new location. I feel lucky and honored to have known him. He always treated me (an 18 year old girl) as an equal and he shared his theories on politics and current events with me, conversations and ideas that I find myself thinking back on every now and again.

Charles, you made a deep impression on me and added to the many experiences that have shaped me into who I am now. I am forever grateful for that.

My condolences to his family.

So sad that he has passed. I had met Charles in 2001 at his shop on Lamar. He was so passionate about what he did especially the world of wet shaving. Since he moved to his new shop I had not seen him as often. I was just talking about him and wanted to share his knowledge with a friend. Upon looking up Enchante it said it was closed and the I saw Charles' obituary. He will be missed.Troy Ross

I worked with a company that Charles purchased from for his store. We shared many long talks about his great state of Texas as well as the government! Gosh he would be so excited to see what is happening now.....I often think about him and have just learned of his passing. My deepest condolences to his family - he was a terrific guy!

I knew Charles long enough to know he was a great man with a great mind. Even when I left Austin several years ago, our long conversations on the phone were always a real joy. His passion and energy for his trade should be an inspiration for us all to love what we do. Thank you Charles for all you did for me and for everyone else. May your soul rest in peace.

I only knew Charles through his store, I am just finding out what happened. Also like many, his passion for bringing shaving order and artistry changed my shaving life on a daily basis. So rather than say what has been said so well, I will speak of his good nature that made me feel like I lost a dear friend.

You see my trips to the store no longer were about shaving. He solved all of those issues for me in a few months many years ago. Rather it was a trip from my office to chat with an old friend and pick up some shave potions.

As many know, Charles was an astute student of politics and philosophy. At the time I was serving my country by working on a project for the DoD. Charles was genuinely fascinated by the work and I shared public knowledge and links whenever I could. When I would return he always would remember and talk about the information he had read.

Those long conversations were more than two guys pontificating the future of the world. He often encouraged me and asked for my advice. Especially when I was traveling several times a month and working long hours, he reminded me of why the work was so important.

Charles you were truly a gentleman and scholar but more importantly a good friend. Thank you for sharing your passion for shaving and encouragement.

Like so many, I am dismayed at Charles's passing. I only knew him through his videos, writings, and wonderful product line, but his pioneering work in Method Shaving impacted my life in such a positive way that I will remember him very fondly. He was so passionate about his shaving system and had such an incomparable understanding of wet shaving, that I knew I had to follow his teachings. The shaving theory and product line he developed were orders of magnitude better than anything else I ever tried (and I tried MANY). One shave was all it took and I was hooked. I think I must have spoken about Charles more than any person I never actually met. I hope his Hydrolast line of products will continue to be sold because I think this is his legacy and I know using them will always call his memory fondly to mind. If he was even half as good a person as he was an advocate for wet shaving (and I have no doubt he was) I know he will be greatly missed by those who were even more fortunate than I was by knowing him and having the pleasurable experience of hearing him wax skillfully on shaving and other subjects. RIP Charles and thank you for your enormous impact towards returning us all to a more gentlemanly way of grooming. You were a class act. I offer all his loved ones my sincerest and deepest condolences on their loss.

I just found out about Charles's passing when I tried to visit his shop during a trip to Austin this past weekend. I offer my sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones. He was truly one of a kind. I can safely say I will never regret the thrill (and terror) of having him shave my face with his own products. His passion and inquisitiveness were apparent to anyone who had the pleasure of visiting his shop.

Thanks for the great shaves, friend.

I just found out that Charles Roberts passed away. I went to the shop to visit to buy perfume and Borotalco and saw the store had closed and found out the sad news. So sad, he was so nice and knowledgeable. I was a customer for many years since Enchante was at Bodie Oaks Shopping Center. My husband took me in there to buy me several gifts then I was hooked. I will miss Mr.Roberts! God rest your soul! Your were always so nice to me! Thank you!

My deepest condolences go out to Charles' family. I just heard about his passing and could not believe it. Charles was a passionate human being and enjoyed having great conversations with all of his customers. He will be missed by his family, friends and clients.

I accidentally walked into Enchanté about 6 years ago to find my wife a birthday present and was greeted by Charles as if we were lifelong friends, and I was hooked ever since. Unfortunate for me, I switched employment about a year ago and lost touch with Charles. There are not many true and honest people like Charles nowadays, and I'm honored to have met him.

I am so sad to know that Charles is no longer with us. I was his supplier to his unique Shave cloth which he absolutely loved... since 2008. A wonderful man whom I enjoyed talking with every time he called us at Maguey Weaves.

I would certainly appreciate if a family member could call me, Astrid at 915 873-8973
Thank you very much.

So sorry for your loss. I used Charles' methods and products for the past several years and spent many hours with him on the phone. He was unceasingly kind, gracious, generous, and what an intellect. I am so saddened to have heard of his passing, and my thoughts and condolences go his family. And, although I know this is of small condolence, for those who loved Method Shaving, Charles's legacy will live on for a very long time.

This is a very sad news. I talked to Charles only once over the phone, few years ago. His willingness to help and to share his knowledge was clearly tangible even over the phone. A great person that will be missed by many. My most felt condolences and preyers to his family. RIP Charles.

I'm so sad to hear about Charles. He was such an energetic, positive, people-oriented guy. He would just light up when he had someone to talk to about the things he loved and things he knew a lot about. He was a great lover of literature, and he had excellent taste in that and everything else. He wanted to be a huge shaving products magnate, and he deserved to be. He did it old school--made his own top-quality products, innovated, worked his clients one by one, trained people on his stuff, ran his own store and mail-order business. All on his own. There are not many like that anymore.

I'm a customer and while I only talked with Charles once (For an hour) it was clear his passion for and knowledge of wet shaving. During our conversation he quickly diagnosed my problem and then we just continued the conversation on a variety of topics. I really enjoyed talking with Charles, reading the articles on shaving 101 and watching the videos about his Method Shaving.

My prays and thoughts are with the family and friends of Charles A. Robert. All the best.

Rest in peace Charles, though I never knew you personally, the many e-mails we shared back and forth showed what kind of man you were. Kind, passionate, giving and selfless, a very rare combination. The world has lost a good man. My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I'm so very sad to hear that Charles is no longer with us. I met him several years ago when I was searching for a particular perfume. No one had a casual conversation with Charles about fragrance, and his description of the "palettes" involved caused me to comment that as a painter, I understood.
Charles asked to see some of my work, and my paintings were soon filling the walls of his boutique. When I saw him, he was constantly looking for ways to foster committed local artists in an art gallery he envisioned.
I know that there are many people who will miss him and his enthusiasm. I am one.

I've been dealing with Robert pretty much all the 20 or so years he was in business. He was always antimated and enthusiastic and loved a good banter about politics and the economy. Our South Carolina connection made for interesting conversation, especially his history at The University of South Carolina and Myrtle Beach. I'll miss him.
