Sethan Sprague Obituary

Sethan Sprague

July 8, 1984 - February 16, 2016

Salem - Sethan Charles Sprague born July 8, 1984, in Salem, Oregon to Karl Sprague and Peggy (Sprague) Boquist, passed away February 16, 2016 in Salem, Oregon.  Seth was the first child in a large and blended family.  He graduated from St. Vincent's Catholic School in 6th grade as Valedictorian, then going to Perrydale School, and graduating from Perrydale High School as Salutatorian.  After High School he received a full scholarship at Carroll College in Helena, Montana, where he double majored in Theology and Political Science.  He graduated from College with honors.  Upon College Graduation he enlisted into the United States Navy.  Served as a gunners mate on the sub-tender, the USS Frank Cable, and spent most of his duty in what he called the "big ocean."  To calm his mom's fears he always told her the bad guys just follow us, what they really want is that sub!  He was stationed in Guam, Diego Garcia, and the waters of the Persian Gulf.  After his 6 years in the US Navy he returned home, and moved into a house with an old high school friend.  He worked at Ames Laboratories in Salem, Oregon.  Seth was preceded in death by his Uncle, Rick Bainter (Godfather); and an infant brother, Franklyn; and an infant sister, Francis Rae.  He is survived by his Father Karl Sprague, his Mother Peggy Boquist, and his Step-Father Brian Boquist, also his brothers Samuel (Tanya) Sprague, William Boquist, Robert Boquist; and step-brother Mathew  Kinney, also his sisters Ashten (Boquist) Rich, Daria Boquist, and Julianna Sprague; and cherished niece, Annabelle Sprague. He was an introspective and intense intellectual and could always be counted on for the most stirring dialogues and robust conversations.  Upon returning from military service, he had difficulties with finding meaning and purpose.  His family and friends are deeply saddened by his passing and miss him so very much.   In lieu of flowers a donation in Seth's name can be given to "Lines of Life"  5100 SW Macadam Ave # 400, Portland, OR 97239 Phone:(503) 244-5211; a suicide hotline oriented toward veterans, military members and families.

There isn't much more I can add. I live in Australia and met him when commenting on a post he made for a walkthrough of the game 'Exhumed'. I was so impressed with how nice he was to me, knowing I was an 'old lady'. He seemed genuinely interested in why I made walkthroughs for my children and grandchildren. I was dismayed when I couldn't get a reply from him anymore and felt like I lost a long-time friend when Peggy contacted me. So sad that such a lovely young man passed from this world too early. Peggy I haven't been able to finish off my walkthroughs yet, to post in memory of Sethan but I'm still working on it and I have a contact that will do it for me when the walkthroughs are ready. I feel for Seth's family and everyone who loved and lost him. Love from Meredyth. P.S. The first message was automatically generated (not by me) but it's true, I didn't get an email letting me know the Guest Book was available. Hope this message gets through.

I am tremendously sorry for your loss. Although we only got to see each other every couple of months or texted here and there since he got out of the military, I considered him a dear friend.

I served with him on the USS Frank Cable and was deployed with him at the same time on the USS Emory S Land. It was during that arduous deployment on the Land that I got to know him well and came to depend on his friendship. He was very intelligent and even when we didn't see eye to eye I could always count on him to have a healthy debate whatever the topic. I always chose Seth as my Liberty partner while overseas because we shared many interests and enjoyed trying the foreign foods and local monuments rather than the drunken stereotypes most young sailors tend to flock to when given the chance.

He visited me several times last year and we would get together with my older kids and play "nerdy games". My older boys considered him an uncle because he would always bring a new game and teach them how to play. We even went camping out by Mount Saint Helens last year and even though the weather was bad and the trip was kind of a train wreck my boys speak fondly of it often. We were freezing and Seth was the only one who could get a fire going.

We last spoke in December and we talked about normal nerdy stuff and I asked him if we could get together after the holidays and he said he'd like that. Then we changed the subject and talked about the new Star Wars movie.

I know it has been several months now but I wanted to let you know that our family loved your son and he will be missed.

I believe that he made a positive impact on me as a person, and I'm grateful for that.

Again I'm sorry for your loss.

I served with Sprague on board the USS Frank Cable. He was one of the best conversationalists I ever met. Always full of endless knowledge and good spirits , most times I found talking with him was more entertaining than whatever else was going on. Thank you to all of those who had a part in raising such a awesome man. The world was a smarter place because of him and he will be truly missed.

I served with GM2 Sprague on the USS Frank cable. He was in my division and a good buddy of mine outside the Navy. I remember going over to his place and working on his "Guam Bomb" car on a fairly regular basis. I talked to him a few times on email and just found out today that he has passed on. I'll miss him, he was a great person you could always count on to do the right thing. Fair winds on following seas.

Again Peggy, I'm so sorry for your loss and I will miss Seth. My first contact with Seth was through Gamefaqs, which Seth posted Walkthroughs on. His walkthrough on an old game called Exhumed, PlayStation version, helped me finish it. I thanked him for the walkthrough then I saw his walkthrough on the PC version, which he had only done the first part of from a demo. He said he would like to post the full version if anyone had it. I did. I have spent months building a computer to play this old game and Seth was looking forward to receiving the walkthrough from me. Sadly, it won't be posted on his site but my daughter says if I finish it, she knows how to post it on Gamefaqs. I will do this in tribute and memory of Seth (Mr.Seth0708). He was lovely to me, considering I was 64 at the time. He had genuine enthusiasm talking to me through emails. It's good to finally have a picture of him. Seth also commented on the internet under the name BoringPolitico. I feel like I've lost a best friend, even though I only knew him a few years & never met him. As him mum says, he was a wonderful man.

Peggy and Family, my sincere sympathy for the loss you are suffering. Your Son now sits with our heavenly Father!! Sethan is surrounded by those loved ones who has gone before him and has indeed found his purpose. It is my prayer that you will find comfort in knowing that your Son is in the hands of the King. To think that one day you will see him again for eternity is something you must remember during this time. May you experience the peace that only God's love can bring. My condolences to the Sprague and Boquist families. It is a sad reality that the war doesn't end simply because a deployment is over. Thank you for your service and may God bless you always.
