Glen DeLapp Obituary

Glen N. DeLapp May 27, 1922 - September 24, 2008 SALEM - Glen Norman DeLapp, 86, peacefully passed away at home Wednesday morning, September 24, 2008. Glen, beloved father of four and a father figure to many, began his life in the hills of Eola, west of Salem, on May 27, 1922. He was the son of Matthew and Bertha DeLapp. After graduating from Salem High School he married Laurine Marie Cross in 1942. He served in the Navy during World War II, where he learned the carpentry trade. On returning to Salem he began DeLapp Construction, doing residential and commercial contracting. He retired in 1992, but remained a consultant on many projects developed by his son, Larry. He loved his family and his Lord. He met each of life's challenges with love, humor, and grace. Each of us will continue to hear his words of advice and apply them to our own lives. Glen was a member of First Baptist Church of Salem. He was a mentor and friend who offered guidance and wisdom in support of many church youth activities. He valued all persons, encouraging them to believe in the Lord and to trust Him to help them achieve their greatest purpose and potential in life. Those passing before him were his parents; his wife, Laurine in 2001; son, Norman Lee in 1969; and sisters, Ethel Gross, Sammy Ackley, and Beth Berge. Survivors include children, Lynn Wingerd (David) of Fairfax, Va., Kathy Warkentin of Bakersfield, Calif., and Larry DeLapp (Debra) of Salem; grandchildren, Lisa McCormick (Chad), Michael Wingerd (Melissa), Denise Wingerd, and Daniel Wingerd, all of Virginia, Sarah Caughell (Mark) and Daron Warkentin of California, Kristi Pierce (Sean), Teresa Foote (Kenny), Alan DeLapp, and Scott DeLapp (Andrea) of Oregon; seven great-grandchildren; brothers, Perry DeLapp of Salem and David DeLapp (Patricia) of Lyons; sister, Jean Biggs (Bill) of Lincoln City; and many nieces and nephews. A special thank you goes to Judy Schaeffer for her personal touch as Glen's in-home caregiver for the last five years, and to the caring staff at the DaVita Dialysis Center, who came to know Glen over the last six years. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, September 26 at Howell-Edwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 27 at Salem First Baptist Church. Interment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park, Salem. Memorial contributions may be made to Salem First Baptist Church Building Fund.

Uncle Bub was a wonderful, warm human being that enjoyed family gatherings. I have many fond memories of sitting at family reunions, listening to stories that only could be told in that special way of his. A quick smile, and wink of the eye, those are what I remember when I think of him. He will be greatly missed.

Sending my heartfelt thoughts and sympathies to the DeLapp family. You hold a "Special" place in my heart, as did your dad! I remember him as very kind, gentle and loving toward his family with a great sense of humor. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by all of you...and my oh my, all those wonderful grandchildren and great-grandchildren! Special hugs to Lynn & David, Larry & Debbie and Kathy. I regret that I'm unable to attend the funeral as I'd love to see you. Blessings to you all. Isaiah 41:10

A beautiful tribute to a wonderful man. As my uncle Bub, I knew him as one of the seven, the DeLapp clan siblings, quite a raucous and loving group! Always a very funny man, ready with a quick quip and silly story, always broke the group up. Lots of wonderful memories of visits in Salem with him, family picnics, good stories, and a twinkle in his eye. We were blessed to have known and loved him, and he will be greatly missed.
