I often think about him--now more than five years since he died--and I miss him very much. He was an advocate for justice, fairness, diversity, and decency and just common sense. He was a wonderful friend and colleague (we were both Profs at W.O.U.), and I learned much from him. I miss our discussions about literature, teaching, and politics. I miss his humor and intellectual insight. (2/21/19)

I will miss you, my teacher, who showed me the beauty of William Blake. You always left your door open to share with whoever needed what was inside your house. Anne Robertson, Eugene

Such a dear, kind-hearted man who will be missed by his family and by the community. May Karen and his children find peace and celebrate the wonderful life that George lived.

My wife and I had a little baby boy in January and we called him George.
I simply googled his name and was saddened to read this article but pleased to know that he shares the name with a man who clearly touched the hearts of many.
May you rest in peace George.

Other than George and Karen being "family" for the past 40+ years, he was one of the BEST teachers I've had the honor to know. As any of his writing students will report, George's feedback comments were oftentimes longer and more richly crafted than the original paper we had written. His respect for his students was inexhaustible.

I was a student of Mr. Slawson's in the mid seventies at what was then OCE. He was one of a kind. I remember him coming to class in overalls and a railroad engineer's hat. He was one of a kind and and I will miss knowing that he is still around.

My Uncle George was an amazing man....a great teacher, father, husband, and always helped others to find their talents and abilities. We will miss him everyday...we are all lucky to have had him in our lives.

I remember George always having something to say that made me smile. His work at Jason Lee UMC Kairos Kitchen was so faithful for such a long time. His activism was inspiring especially because he was so humble about the gifts he contributed. He lived a wonderful life.

When I first enrolled in one of George's classes in 1968, at the impressionable age of 18, I thought he was the most intelligent, wisest, most passionate person I had ever met. Thing is, I still do think that.

I'm so sorry to hear of George's passing, but glad for the good he did in the world and in the lives of the students he taught, in and out of the classroom.

A wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend--from whom I learned much and with whom I shared a love for literature and a lot of laughter.
