George Slawson Obituary

George Dodson Slawson

August 31, 1931 - February 17, 2014

George Dodson Slawson surprised us and slipped the bonds of this earth early Monday morning, February 17, 2014. When he left, a full, bright double rainbow appeared in the East.

If you were struggling for Civil Rights in the 60s, against the Vietnam War in the 70s, learning to write and to think in the 80s, or if you were a child in danger in the 90s or in this last decade, George Slawson stood with you, shouted with you, marched with you, sang with you, made you laugh, taught you, told you stories, or even saved you.

George was born in Dallas, Oregon on August 31, 1931, the son of teachers. He spent most of the next 65 years in schools, studying at Dallas High, Fresno State University, Oregon College of Education, San Francisco State, and finally graduate school at U of O. He began his teaching career at North High School, in Salem, and taught English and Film at Southern Oregon Community College, Fisk University in Nashville, then at Western Oregon University, from 1967 to his retirement in 1996.

In keeping with his passion to serve, in later years George volunteered his time and energies for the indigent and children. He began at Jason Lee United Methodist Church working in Kairos Kitchen, for 20 years managing and serving homemade soup and bread, on Sundays, to all who came through the door. He became a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for foster children, and for 12 years advocated in court for the best interests of children whose lives had been torn apart. Shortly before his death, he volunteered with the Citizen's Review Board to oversee the State's cases for foster children.

George was preceded in death by his son, Del Slawson; the rest of us - his wife, Karen, his children, Lee Ann and Gary Slawson, Casle Portner, Chris Jones, and Cassie Studer - will continue sharing his generous gifts in our own ways. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren are reflections of his strength, kindness, wit and heroism. They will miss their Grandpa, as will countless other loved ones, students, friends and kitties. So it goes.

Please join us as we gather to remember and honor George on Sunday, March 16th at 2pm in the Pacific room, Werner University Center, at Western Oregon University. "To thee no star be dark. Both heaven and earth Friend thee forever." - Wm Shakespeare

I often think about him--now more than five years since he died--and I miss him very much. He was an advocate for justice, fairness, diversity, and decency and just common sense. He was a wonderful friend and colleague (we were both Profs at W.O.U.), and I learned much from him. I miss our discussions about literature, teaching, and politics. I miss his humor and intellectual insight. (2/21/19)

I will miss you, my teacher, who showed me the beauty of William Blake. You always left your door open to share with whoever needed what was inside your house. Anne Robertson, Eugene

Such a dear, kind-hearted man who will be missed by his family and by the community. May Karen and his children find peace and celebrate the wonderful life that George lived.

My wife and I had a little baby boy in January and we called him George.

I simply googled his name and was saddened to read this article but pleased to know that he shares the name with a man who clearly touched the hearts of many.

May you rest in peace George.

Other than George and Karen being "family" for the past 40+ years, he was one of the BEST teachers I've had the honor to know. As any of his writing students will report, George's feedback comments were oftentimes longer and more richly crafted than the original paper we had written. His respect for his students was inexhaustible.

I was a student of Mr. Slawson's in the mid seventies at what was then OCE. He was one of a kind. I remember him coming to class in overalls and a railroad engineer's hat. He was one of a kind and and I will miss knowing that he is still around.

My Uncle George was an amazing man....a great teacher, father, husband, and always helped others to find their talents and abilities. We will miss him everyday...we are all lucky to have had him in our lives.

I remember George always having something to say that made me smile. His work at Jason Lee UMC Kairos Kitchen was so faithful for such a long time. His activism was inspiring especially because he was so humble about the gifts he contributed. He lived a wonderful life.

When I first enrolled in one of George's classes in 1968, at the impressionable age of 18, I thought he was the most intelligent, wisest, most passionate person I had ever met. Thing is, I still do think that.

I'm so sorry to hear of George's passing, but glad for the good he did in the world and in the lives of the students he taught, in and out of the classroom.

A wonderful teacher, colleague, and friend--from whom I learned much and with whom I shared a love for literature and a lot of laughter.
