Lloyd Reinwald Obituary

Lloyd H. Reinwald

May 8, 1921 - February 3, 2012

SALEM- Our father, at age 90, passed away in his sleep at his home after a month long battle with pneumonia.

Dad was the 4th of five children born to Henry and Bessie Reinwald in Laird Saskatchewan, Canada. The family migrated from Canada to the US and settled in Salem in 1926.

Dad started an apprenticeship with the Butchers Union at age 14 which launched his career as a meat cutter. In 1942 he married his soul mate, Myrtle, and was drafted into the Army. After proudly serving his country, he returned to Salem in 1946.

Along with his wife and close friend, Bob Pitzer, they ran Bob & LLoyd's, a meat counter/locker business, until 1963. He sold insurance for a few years until he opened his own butcher shop, Lloyd's Custom Meats. It was a mom and pop business for more than 20 years. Even after his retirement in 1983, he fondly introduced himself as "Lloyd the Butcher".

Dad loved to fish and owned many boats but was most proud of the 23' Cabin Cruiser he built in 1959. Stories of his fishing trips to both Detroit and Diamond Lake as well as childhood memories of the world changing around him are held dear to all who knew him.

Dad married Wanda Herigstad in 1982, which combined our two families. Retirement allowed Dad the time to travel with Wanda giving him wonderful memories of fishing in Alaska and seeing the sights of Washington DC. He also loved gardening and spent many hours in his yard as well as with the "Tuesday Crew" on the grounds of Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Dad is survived by his wife Wanda, sister Ruth (Forman), four children from his marriage to Myrtle, sons David, Dennis (Vicki), Steven (Deb), and daughter Jeannine (Phil) Beckley. Also Wanda's four children, Gene (Norma), Donna Selby, Diane (Gary) Fountain, and Nathan as well as many, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give special thanks to all of the loving care shown to our dad at Lancaster Village Assisted Living this past year. Also, to Willamette Valley Hospice for the extra care shown during the last weeks of his life.

In Lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to Holy Cross Lutheran Church where his memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 2:00 pm.

Lloyd was a man with a great smile. I can remember walking by their meat shop and watching them through the windows. If I stared long enough, they would look up from their job and give me a big smile.

I only know the two older Reinwald sons but they, too, have wonderful smiles. Based on what I know about Denny and David, their gentle souls can be attributed to Myrtle and Lloyd.

My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this sad time. May the memories of the good times spent together add some comfort to them.
