Earl Groh Obituary

Earl "Bud" L. Groh, Jr. June 1, 1926 - August 11, 2009 SALEM - Bud was born June 1, 1926 in Seattle, Wash. and passed away August 11, 2009 at the age of 83 after a long and courageous battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Bud volunteered for service with the Navy a few days after graduating from Salem High School in 1944 and enlisted with the Victory Volunteers for WWII. He was recalled for active duty during the Korean Conflict of 1950. Bud married Joy M. Curr in June of 1952 and to this union were born two sons, Brett A. Groh and Page L. Groh. Bud was always ready to take his sons bowling, fishing, to band practice or to anything else that was on the agenda. The light of his life were his grandchildren, Brianne and Jared. Bud worked at Weider's Salem Laundry for 20 years and retired in 1991 from Commercial Business Supply. He was a charter member of the Keizer Elks and was an Elks member for 45 years. Bud was also a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a charter member of the South Salem Seniors. Bud and Joy loved to dance and were on the Keizer Elks bowling team for many years. Bud was predeceased by his parents, Earl L. Groh and Ruth Hill Groh; and his sisters, Ruthie Van Hess, Margaret Patzer and Helen Corpman. He is survived by Joy, his loving wife of 57 years; his two sons, Brett (Brenda) and Page (Robin); and his two grandchildren, Brianne and Jared; as well as two sisters-in-law, Pat Clay and Dorothy Curr. The family wishes to extend many thanks for the care provided by Dr. Stageman, Dr. Hay, Dr. Marvel and Jennifer, and the lovely caring nurses at Salem Hospital. Bud requested no formal services.

Much love and sympathy is sent to our dear friend Joy, sons Bret and Page, their spouses and the grandchildren. We will miss Bud so very much. I have known Bud and Joy since my girls and their sons were small and we all lived on the same street. Our children played together, and grew up to teenagers on that same block. In those days, and always, through the years, I remember Bud as a devoted husband and loving Father. He was a wonderful conversationalist and we always enjoyed being in his company, in recent years most usually at Sunday breakfast at the Keizer Elks, and when he and Joy would come to listen to our singing during karaoke sessions. We will always remember him as one who enjoyed music so very much. There are so many wonderful memories during this span of 50+ years that I will cherish, as well as my husband Andy, who has known Bud in recent years. God Bless you, Friend Bud.

I want to send my condolences to Bud's family. He was a close friend of my husband Jeff Shute and they spent much time together in the Navy during WWII. I was happy to visit with him and his wife two years ago. Husband Jeff died 24 years ago--Bud and Jeff are sailing again, together. Pat Shute
