Anne McKillip Obituary

Anne F. McKillip

April 26, 1927 - March 4, 2013

SALEM - Anne F. McKillip passed away peacefully, but unexpectedly on March 4, 2013, at the Memory Care Unit of Capital Manor where she had lived the last two out of six years. Elizabeth Anne Frederick was born April 26, 1927, in Berwyn, Illinois. Anne lived and traveled in Paris and London as a preschooler and spoke German and French as a youngster. During junior high, as tiny as she was, she proudly played the bass drum. In 1949, she graduated from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio, and married Richard J. McKillip the very next weekend as he had returned from the war with his brother as well. Two years later Jon was born and two years after that Jeff. Both boys were born in Ohio, then the family moved to Salem where their daughter was born and they lived out the front door of South High. Once again they moved to Cleveland, but returned to Salem in 1967 so Dick could work in Dallas. All the while Anne had returned to college to obtain an education degree from Kent State University.

Upon moving back to Salem, she was escorted by Salem Public Schools' staff to several schools before she determined on Salem Heights. She worked there for several years, then moved to Morningside for the next ten years. Her last three years were spent at Candalaria. While at Morningside she accomplished teaching guitar, had the blacktop painted with the outline of the continental United States, and had her students make a copper mural that hung in the entryway for years. In total she taught in Salem-Keizer for 17 years, mostly as a fifth grade teacher before she retired.

In retirement they traveled extensively going as far as Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. She and Dick enjoyed their time each winter in Palm Springs with each year staying longer and longer until he passed away in 2006. They had been married for 56 years.

Anne was a tenor in the choir of First Presbyterian Church for many years and enjoyed music of all types. She always supported the local arts.

She is survived by her sons, Jonathan (Doris) and Jeffery (Donna), and daughter, Megan Buczynski. She has five grandchildren - Erin, Rebecca, Alex, Zac & Matt.

Her family is especially appreciative of the genuine love and care shown to her by the wonderful staff of the Capital Manor Memory Care Unit.

Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Salem Keizer Educational Foundation. http://www.skeducationfoundation.org

Services will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2013 at 1:00 PM at Capitol Manor.

Anne McKillip was an exceptional woman and an outstanding teacher. As people have already noted, she had a reputation for being strict and the kids referred to her as "Killer McKillip." At the end of 4th grade, when I learned she would be my 5th grade teacher, I was scared. I shouldn't have been. As it turned out, Mrs. McKillip was the most significant teacher of my childhood. She ignited my love of learning. Under her tutelage reading became a joy rather than a chore. I can't say enough about this amazing woman who had such an impact on my life. Thank you, Mrs. McKillip, for the gifts you gave to the children of Salem who were lucky enough to have you as a teacher.

Mrs. McKillip wasn't my 5th grade teacher but I remember doing the copper mural. She was strict with the kids but in a way that we knew where the boundaries were. My condolences to her family.

I am sure Anne wouldn't remember me but I certainly remember her. I was in Mrs. Burch's class in 1976. I remember how much a loved that map she had printed on the blacktop and how it has contributed to my love of geography today! I also participated in the copper mural and I was artistic (I am an art teacher today) so she made sure I had the opportunity to carve an eagle. She was very kind to me and I am sure she impacted many other lives as she did mine.

Mrs. McKillip was my 5th grade teacher. I remember the copper mural and I remember Megan from outdoor camp. She was a strict teacher (which is a good thing), and very fair. RIP Mrs. McKillip.

Anne was very gracious and welcoming when my family moved to Salem. She thoughtfully eased the transition for Kim by finding a friend her age. Some of the nicest conversations I have had were with her.

Megan, we are so sorry to hear of your loss. I have missed your Mom so much sitting beside me at church. As you know, Donna loved her as her 5th grade teacher. Our deepest sympathy goes out to you and your brothers.
