Carlos Durand "Bonny" Bonnot

Carlos Bonnot Obituary

Col. Carlos Durand "Bonny" Bonnot died Jan. 12, 2011, in St. Augustine. Mr. Bonnot was born in Edna, Texas, on July 18, 1921, the son of the late Eva Jane and Carlos C.

Interested in aviation at an early age, he was a licensed pilot of biplanes by age 16 and spent his career in the U.S. Air Force, serving in numerous countries abroad.

Bonnot studied mathematics and physics at Baylor University, earning his degree in 1942. After a brief stint teaching high school in Edna, he quickly realized he wanted a larger challenge. Offered the opportunity to fly in the Army Air Corps, he enlisted in the graduate school of meteorology at the University of California Los Angeles as part of his enlistment into the Army Air Corps. After serving for only six months, he was called to active duty. During World War II, he was stationed throughout the South Pacific, heading the weather squadron involved in the planning of the Hiroshima campaign. Immediately following World War II, he was involved in the nuclear testing program in Nevada. He also served in Guam; Hawaii; the Pentagon; as a professor at the Air War College in Montgomery, Ala.; SHAPE Command in Paris; Squadron Commander in Saudi Arabia; and Strike Command in Tampa, Fla.

Mr. Bonnot married Jo Ann Getzen on May 11, 1949.

After retiring from the Air Force in 1970, Mr. Bonnot and his family returned to Gainesville, Fla., where he was involved in consulting for Lockheed Airspace, banking and real estate development. Following the death of his wife in 1996, he kept a busy travel schedule, often visiting his sons and their families who lived overseas. In 1997, he made St. Augustine his full-time residence.

Survivors include two sons, Carlos Wyche Bonnot (Youmna) of Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Brooks James Bonnot (Ruth Anne) of Atlanta; and four granddaughters, Layla Bonnot, Mona Bonnot, Katherine Anne Bonnot and Michelle Bonnot.

Visitation for friends and family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at Craig Funeral Home in St. Augustine. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Jan. 15, 2011, at Evergreen Cemetery in Gainesville, with Dr. Doug Kirk, emeritus pastor at First United Methodist Church of Gainesville, officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests any contributions be made to the American Cancer Society in loving memory of "Bonny."

Wyche & Brooks,

Your dad had an office in the building with Sam Holloway when I worked for Northwestern Mutual.

He was so proud of both of you. I did meet you both during that time.

Your dad was so smart and it was such a job to know him.

We were sadden to read of Bonny's passing. He had been a friend of ours for 60+ years. He was witty, intelligent, charming, kind, loving and always had a smile. We were proud to call him our friend. He will be missed by all.
