Thomas Johnson Obituary

Johnson, Dr. Thomas A., Jr. age 74, of Chesterfield, Missouri and Santa Rosa Beach, Florida returned to our Lord peacefully at his home in Santa Rosa Beach on Wednesday, January 18th. Beloved husband for fifty years of Elizabeth (Betty); loving father of their five children, Laura Johnson, Linda (Mike) DeCamp, Kristin (Jeff) Vestal, Michael Johnson and Paul Johnson; attentive grandfather to their eight grandchildren, Jack, Emily and Ava DeCamp; Justin, Claudia, Nathan, Lizzy and Jessica Vestal; and caring brother of Richard (Sandra) Johnson and Robert (Jean) Johnson. Tom is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Alice Johnson and his brother, Paul Johnson. Dr. Johnson cherished his forty-year career practicing family medicine. He was a graduate of Fairfield University in Connecticut and St. Louis University School of Medicine and proudly served in the United States Navy as a medical officer on the submarine USS Will Rogers. In 1976 he joined the Family Medicine Department of Mercy Hospital (formerly St. John's Mercy Medical Center). There he also trained resident physicians and served as chairman of the department. Following his retirement in 2006, he continued to serve his community as a volunteer, lifestyle coach, and with his continued love for learning became a master gardener in Florida. He approached each day with guidance from God and shared his love for Him by seizing every opportunity to exclaim his blessings. There is no question that all who knew him were blessed with a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother, doctor and friend. Papa and Grandma stopped at nothing to be there whenever and wherever they were needed for their friends, family, community and, especially, grandchildren. Always an example that there is nothing more important in life than love, he will be remembered and celebrated for gracefully sharing his unwavering desire for life, health and happiness. Services: Visitation will be held Thursday, January 26th from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Ortmann-Stipanovich Funeral Home, 12444 Olive Blvd, Creve Coeur, Missouri 63141. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 27th at 10:00 a.m. at Incarnate Word Parish, 13416 Olive Blvd, Chesterfield, Missouri 63017, followed by a ceremony and burial at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, 2900 Sheridan Road, St. Louis, Missouri 63125. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to a charity of your choice.

I was saddened to hear of Tom's passing after a search online this morning. I wanted Betty and family know that even though I switched specialities after my internship year, I was led to FP only because after a mentoring opportunity with Tom I had always wanted '... to be like Tom Johnson'. The relationship he had with his patients was so influential to me, and I will always cherish the memories of having had the privilege to know and work with Dr. Tom.
