As a compatriot of my beloved husband Northrop Hardy Kirk, both being memebrs of the first United Nations Internes and Fellows group, he became virtually as our family member. He visited us occasionally, scattering his love and concern for us all. We all will miss him profoundly.

The sudden demise of WAFUNIF Board Member Richard "Larry" Carp is not only a shock to WAFUNIF but also to me, for Larry was not only an exemplar leader that helped steer WAFUNIF through difficult times but also an inspiration for many in the WAFUNIF Secretariat. His loss has been the loss of a dear friend and mentor since 1985. IIMSAM stands with WAFUNIF in solidarity at this hour of grief.

Larry Carp was not only a lawyer, but a humanitarian with a distinguished record of public service in both domestic and international arenas. Domestically, he has served as an aide to Senator Paul Douglas (D-Ill.), and as acting chief counsel of the State Judiciary subcommittee on constitutional rights under Senator Thomas C. Hennings Jr. (D-Mo.). He also served for 13 years as Commissioner and Vice-Chairman of the Missouri Commission on Human Rights for three Governors, from both parties.

Moreover, Larry has also had an illustrious record of service to the United States internationally. Notably, he was one of the original interns at the UN in 1948. He later served in the State Department under Presidents Harry S Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower. More recently, he served as Public Delegate to the 55th UN General Assembly (2000-2001), as appointed by President William J. Clinton.

During this last, short, tenure as Public Delegate, Larry was instrumental in coalescing action to keep Sudan off the Security Council, he assisted in United States Israeli-Palestinian Conflict policy formulation, and addressed the UN on war crimes in the former Yugoslavia. In addition, he was critical in creating a successful vote to grant Hadassah (the Women's Zionist Organization of America) special consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council. It should then come as no surprise that Ambassador Richard C. Holbrooke described Larry as “the very model of a public delegate,” or that Larry, in an unprecedented action, was asked by the United States Mission to the UN to extend his appointment as Public Delegate.

I have always been impressed with Larry's intelligence, compassion, and diligence. He was a true patriot with deeply held humanitarian values, who served as an example of how patience, understanding, insight, and actualization can accomplish even the most lofty of goals. I love and miss him, and I will always hold him in my highest esteem. Larry, thank you for all of your gifts to us.

Dear Mrs. Judy,

It is with this letter I send my sincerest condolences to you and Mr. Larry's Carp family and friends. It was an honor to meet him and a privilege to see him every time he used to come to WAFUNIF. I always admired his devotion to the United Nations causes and applaud his contribution to our organization. We lost a Great Individual who was an inspiration for many, but we will never forget who he was and in how many ways he influenced us.

You will always live in our hearts and prayers. Rest in peace...

To the family of Mr. Larry Carp,

While I have never had the honor of meeting dear Mr. Carp in person at WAFUNIF, memories of his kindness and cordiality, as well as respect for his work at the organization shall fondly be remembered. He was a true role model of an upstanding American citizen, an accomplished career man, and sincere humanitarian for all of his involvement at the United Nations and WAFUNIF, plus much more from what I have learned since his passing. I send out my deepest sympathy and warmest regards to you all, and hope that you are blessed with the happiness which he left in your hearts, rather than the sadness of this time. God bless his soul, God bless his family and friends.

Sincerely,

The amount of good that this kind man has done in our world is a beautiful, enduring legacy that will grow and replicate itself as those whom he has helped in turn help others. My husband Nas and I wish peace and comfort to all those whose lives he has touched.

As a friend I am deeply touched by Larry's departure. He was indeed a gentle giant who surrounded himself with the best mankind had to offer. His many achievements in prose, play writing, and musical compositions were a display of a creative, diverse intellect. This talent displayed itself more publicly in Larry's many civic, public accomplishments culminating in recent years with his appointment as a special envoy to the United Nations General Assembly delegation in New York. But his true stardom was that above all he was a kind and just soul. Those of us who knew him well, loved him deeply. To our children he was Uncle Larry Carp. Judy and Lois, please accept my most heartfelt condolences at his loss. Don
