Mr. Rubenstein was one of the most loyal customers at my bicycle store in Ellisville, purchasing many bikes for his many grandchildren, starting when Wheels West was a tiny hole-in-the-wall.
After a few years and bikes, I extended a good discount as a token of appreciation; he refused it, saying "Tom, you're in business to make a profit, not to give discounts." His kindness extended far beyond refusing a discount.
I have always treasured my memory of an honorable man.
His tradition of honor and fair play carried over to his children, who were always well-spoken of by their employees.
I am long-retired, but I've quoted Mr. Rubenstein on many occasions; he is my definition of a gentleman.
