Dear Mrs. Hearnes and family,
I had the great pleasure of campaigning for Gov. Hearnes. The two of you were instrumental in planting the seeds for my love of politics. As a young adult at that time I saw in the two of you true love for your country and pride in your state. Missouri will be forever indebted to the Hearnes family as will I.

Dear Betty:
My deepest sympathies and prayers to you and the girls. One of the highlights in my life was when I tracked Warren down the night they announced his vctory in 1965. I was attending USC in Los Angeles and called Democratic Headquarters in St Louis, A very cooperative delegate gave me the phone numbers in Charlston, and I was able to congratulate Warren.
The next highlight was when you invited our family and another family we were traveling with, into the Governors Mansion for breakfast. As soon as that was over you had to give a speech somewhere in Jefferson City.
Then the great letters I exchanged with Warren when I spent my year in Viet Nam.
A splendid example of "Duty, Honor, Country," Warren, "Be thou at peace"

Dear Betty,
One of the great highlights of my journalistic career with the St. Louis Globe-Democrat was getting to know and cover events surrounding you and Warren. You served the people of Missouri with honor, intelligence, dignity and warmth. How lucky we all were that Warren Hearnes was able to be a two-term governor. I am so sorry that I was not able to be in Jefferson City on Wednesday. Please know that my love and prayers have been with you during the last few days and will continue to be with you in the months ahead. Please convey my sympathies to your daughters and your entire family. I remember your sisters and brother with great fondness.

I have fond memories of campaigning with Warren and Betty Hearnes thoughout the Bootheel in the '60's and '70's, along with my former husband.
Governor Hearnes was an astute politician, in the best sense of the word; a stalwart Democrat; a fine Christian and a great father. He had a quick wit and was enjoyable to be around. He and Betty made a formidable team that led Missouri into a new era of eduation and mental health. We are fortunate to have had him lead this state and I count it a great privilege to have known him.
My thoughts and prayers are with Betty and the rest of his family at this sad time for all of us.

On behalf of my grandparents, the late Cecil and Lucylle Rice, please accept our condolences. I remember campaigning for and with Governor Hearnes as a small boy with my grandfather in the Pulaski County and central Missouri area. At the time, I only knew that he seemed like a good man and didn't treat others as if he were a Governor. Time allowed me to learn about all of the good things he did for a state that we both love.

As classmates/B-2 Company mates of Warren, we were extremely proud to learn of his election as Gov. His cadet days proved he would be a great, compassionate leader of men. His tenure as Gov. gave ample proof his WP experience helped to produce
extraordinary results for the people of MO with a lasting legacy, much to his credit. Our condolences to the family.

God's Blessings upon the Hearnes family. Gov. Hearnes was a credit to this state and a great example of a life given to public service. He will always be remembered and sadly, missed. My family remembers the day that a helicopter brought him to the end of our street after a tornado, back in the sixties. His concern and caring for our neighborhood touched us all-made us feel like we mattered and that everything was going to alright because someone, (he) cared.

Dear Betty,
You are in my thoughts and prayers in your time of great loss and sorrow.
I cherish the times we shared when I served as Governor John Dalton's Executive Assistant in the office next door to Warren's in the State Capitol when he served Missouri so well as Secretary of State. I appreciated the opportunity to serve Missouri further when Warren kept me on as Director of the Missouri Office of Economic Opportunity following the 1964 elections.
May God continue richly to bless you in this time of sadness and throughtout your long, meangingful life of service.
With kindest regards,
Joe Holt

It was a rainy day when Mr. Hearnes dedicated the LRC named after him at Missouri Western University. As everyone was leaving, I slipped and fell down in the rain and who should come to help me up but Warren Hearnes. I've never forgotten his consideration for others even when no one else may have noticed. RIP Governor.

I remember sitting on the overpass along with every other Charleston resident as Gov. Hearnes came home after his second term. I was young but was so impressed when he pulled in and then spoke, I believe where his office is now. God Bless the Hearnes Family, a great Patriot moves on to bigger things.
