John Dahm Obituary

Dahm, John (Jack) Veith 78, of Brentwood, Missouri. Baptized into the hope of Christ's Resurrection on Tuesday, July 3, 2012. John was born October 17, 1933, to Henry Louis and Helen Barbara (Diederich) Dahm, the fourth of four children. He was fond of saying in later years that he held 23 jobs, his favorite of which was farming with his friend and Best Man, Erwin Sellenriek. John was also a dedicated teacher of woodworking at Community School for many years. As a young man, John served in the U. S. Army for 3 years, stationed in New Jersey at a radar installation. His concern for members of the military and their families lasted his entire life. A graduate of St. Louis University High School, John went on to receive a bachelor's degree from St. Louis University. After a short stint in the Society of Jesus, John entered the Benedictine community of the St. Louis Priory, now the St. Louis Abbey. He spent 4 years at the Priory's motherhouse at Ampleforth, England. In 1969, he left the Priory before taking final vows, and in 1970 married Kathleen Elizabeth Hohn. His connection to and affection for the monks of the St. Louis Abbey remained constant through the years. As a confratre of the Abbey, he will be buried with the Scapular of the Order. John valued his friendships above all else, outside of his family. He maintained a close relationship for over 50 years with the members of the Plato Club, a group established during their university years. In addition to his Abbey friends, his closest lay friends not only allowed but welcomed his daily calls in his later years. Their understanding and love sustained him during a time when he was largely housebound. He leaves behind his wife of 42 years; his three children and their spouses: Nathaniel Leonard and Brenda (Cash) Dahm, Rebecca Clare Dahm and Kris Simmons, and Jonathan David and Angela (Irace) Dahm; his grandchildren, Logan Eric Dahm, Eleanor Iris Dahm and Emily Rose Simmons; his sisters Mary Lou Barr and Helen Ann Newman; his sister-in law and brother-in-law Sally (Hohn) and John Cantwell; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the long and devoted care of his many doctors and of the wonderful nurses at DaVita West Dialysis Center. Services: Funeral mass will be celebrated 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, July 10 at St. Francis Xavier (College Church) 3628 Lindell Blvd. (63108). Interment Calvary Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Social Ministries at St. Francis Xavier College Church or to Home for Our Troops, 6 Main Street, Taunton, MA 02780. The family will receive friends Monday, July 9 in the Great Hall of Ambruster Chapel 6633 Clayton Rd. (Clayton) from 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Online condolences at ambrusterchapel.com
