Hugh Scott Obituary

Scott, Hugh Jr. Hugh Scott Jr. 7/10/1921-1/8/2015 Husband of Julia Price Scott and the late Bebe McAfee Scott. Father of Hugh Scott III (Ann), Phoebe Burke (Spencer), Mac Scott (Ellen) and Henry Scott (Margie). Stepfather of Jeremy Johnstone, Kathy Hibbitts (Kirt) and Chris Johnstone (Pam). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Hugh often referred to himself as Lucky Scott. He had two very happy and successful marriages, and his love for and pride in his family informed all aspects of his life. He was a survivor of two wars, serving as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II and as a Captain and Company Commander in the Korean War. He was a successful businessman who grew a small family company of five employees to a thriving multistate operation which employed over 300 people at the time of his retirement. Hugh devoted 25 years of his life to political engagement, serving in various capacities in the government of the City of Clayton and eventually being elected as a St. Louis County Councilman and serving as Chairman of the Council. He was also appointed to the St. Louis County Police Board and acted as Vice Chairman of the board during his tenure. To quote Hugh, he was successful in all but one election (losing a bid for congress in 1968), but he came to believe he was lucky to have lost that race, given the opportunities that came his way subsequent to his defeat. Hugh had multiple interests, none more so that his fascination with his family's history and his almost obsessive commitment to physical fitness. He spent much of his free time researching and documenting his family tree and profiling his descendents among whom were Sir Francis Drake and Meriwether Lewis. He was an exercise nut who frequently organized inspired (and unorthodox) family athletic competitions and personally logged endless hours on the tennis court and on his bike. He had a personal fitness goal of maintaining a weight within twenty pounds of his spouse (much to the disgruntlement of both of his wives!) Hugh was a man of great honor and integrity who refused to commit to a cause unless he believed in it. He loved his life and his family and felt lucky for every day he was on this earth. Services: A Memorial Service will be conducted at the Episcopal Church of St. Michael and St. George, Wydown at Ellenwood, Clayton on Monday, January 12 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends in the Great Hall following the service. Private interment at Bellefontaine Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials appreciat ed to the charity of one's choice. A SERVICE OF THE LUPTON CHAPEL

We are sorry to hear Mr Scott has passed away. He was a fighter. I remember how he would ride his bicycle everywhere in Clayton and he would stop by and visit my dad,Joe Kohn, who has also passed away. They would go out to breakfast and talk about their military days. Mr Scott was a kind man.
