Helen was a lively member of our St. Louis region of the Jane Austen Society of North America. She always had interesting views on Austen, her characters and novels. After she moved to the Gatesworth, she volunteered to be the resident sponsor for our December meeting in celebration of Jane Austen's birthday. Thanks to her, for about ten years we have held that celebration in the Gatesworth's beautiful Colonnade Room, enjoying good food and royal treatment. We will miss Helen and her quips and opinions. She was an excellent Janeite!

Helen was a wonderful mother in law. I had lively telephoe conversations with her until recent weeks, and often we spoke of her daughter and my late wife, Nancy. Helen would be proud that Nancy's art of the early California missions is currently being exhibited in a one-person show at the Mission San Juan Bautista Museum, San Juan Bautista, California Helen's love of art inspired Nancy and the exhibit, which opened in December, is a lovely reminder of that.
