James H. Stanton

1934 - 2015

With the re-awakening lunar eclipse as his guide, James H Stanton ascended to everlasting peaceful rest, Sept. 28, 2015, in his home and family by his side, after a valiant battle with COPD these last two years.
He was born in June 9, 1934, Hymera, Sullivan County, Ind., to the late John Stanton and Vergie L. (Davis) Stanton. The family moved to St. Joseph County, Mich., in 1941, and he attended Centreville schools.
James was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during the Korean War in 1957. He returned to Indiana in 1974, maintaining and operating the family farm. Jim was a member of Jackson Township Volunteer Patrol and Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; and a sister, Thelma J Griffith.
He is survived by wife of 58 years, Wanda E. (Harvey) Stanton, whom he married Sept. 13, 1957; two daughters, Lucinda E Murphy (Sean) of Hondo, Texas, and Cassandra E (Brad) Robertson of Springville, Ind.; three grandchildren, Caitlin M. Murphy, Bradley Robertson Jr. and Michelle (Clint) Weaver; and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Evelyn J. Steffey of Sturgis.
The family wishes to extend a "thank you" to the VA medical staff and to IN Home Health staff for their professional personal assistance and thoughtfulness, during these last few months of critical need.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at Brust Funeral Home in Sullivan, Ind., with Pastor Jeffery Lee officiating. Interment will follow in Pogue Cemetery in Fairbanks, Ind., with a military graveside service by the Sullivan, Shelburn and Hymera Legion posts and Sullivan County VFW post. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today and 9 a.m. until the service on Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, at Brust Funeral Home.
