Harold Riggs Obituary

Born on December 19, 1924, in Port Arthur, Texas, Harold passed away on August 3, 2011, after a long and fruitful life.
Harold was preceded in death by the love of his life, wife Dorothy Guillotte of Sulphur; mother Bertha Lewis of Sulphur; father Tillman T. Riggs Sr. of New Iberia; and brother Tillman T. Riggs Jr. of Port Arthur, Texas.
He is survived by his son, David Austin Riggs and wife Darlene of Augusta, Texas; daughter, Claudia Carey and son-in-law Phil of Hutto, Texas; sisters, Ruth Yarbrough of Austin and Dorothy Ragsdale of Pearland, Texas; nieces, Lindsey Jydstrup of Las Vegas and Leslie Riggs of Alexandria, Va.; and many special nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins.
Harold was a veteran of World War II, where he proudly served as a gunner on a troop transport ship in the Marine Corps. He worked his entire professional career as an oil executive for Union Sulphur-Union Texas Petroleum. He was well-respected by his peers for his ethics, intelligence and his sense of fair play.
He was unwavering in his love for his friends and family, and he touched many lives. His favorite places and times were the Sulphur Mines, where he enjoyed many days with his family as a boy and where he began his professional career after graduating from Tulane University, and his home in the Piney Woods of Augusta, Texas, enjoying nature at its finest.
A kinder, gentler person you will never have the pleasure of knowing, and he will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Many thanks to the angels from the Wesleyan Hospice and the Wesleyan at Estrella. They made a huge difference during his final days on this earth.
Harold will be cremated, with a memorial service to celebrate his life tentatively scheduled for the fall of this year at the First United Methodist Church in Grapeland, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wesleyan Hospice in Georgetown, Texas, or the First United Methodist Church in Grapeland, Texas.
Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.cookwaldendavisfuneralhome.com.

Claudie and David, My heart goes out to both of you and your families as you grieve the loss of your Dad. I remember growing up together and all the fun we had going to the beach on Sunday afternoons, playing volleyball in the pool, riding horses , Choralettes and that incredible trip to Acapulco. Life was so simple then. Your parents were wonderful and always so gracious and kind to me. I am also glad that we "reconnected" last week and discovered the east texas common thread. Let's not let so much time go by again. Mike and I will keep you all in our prayers.

Claudia & David,I was so sorry to hear that your Dad had passed and your Mother, as well. I have fond memories of playing at your house on Roos Road. Your parents were always so gracious and made me feel so welcome. No doubt, they passed on all their good qualities to you. Nancy Eaton Alvarado

I have so many amazing memories of all of you. The obituary is a beautiful tribute to Harold - a true gentleman in every sense. I am lucky to have been a part of his life. My love to all.

I was saddened, yet happy at his long life, to read Harold has passed. My 1st job out of high school was in the purchasing dept @ Union Texas with Harold being the Director of Purchasing. I was fortunate enough to have him choose me as his secretary just a few months after beginning as a filing clerk. We had a great working/friend relationship that I have never forgotten. He was a kind and gentle giant! I also knew Dorothy. They were both fine folks.
May God close the hole in your hearts quickly.
