Linda St. Martin, age 67, of Gulfport, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014.
She was born on Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana. She moved to Biloxi as a young child and lived on the coast most of her life. She is an alumna of the University of Mississippi. She worked in politics and social justice.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Sallie Ashley Watts Brown and father W.E. Brown.
She is survived by her children, Lt. Col. Hugh B. St. Martin and wife Rachel, and Ashley A. St. Martin, siblings Frankie Slowey, Gene Brown, and Kim Baldwin, grandson Hugh III, and many nieces and nephews.
Linda St. Martin served as a guiding light, leading the way for equal justice for all. Linda focused the spotlight on the issues at hand, never on herself. She never asked others to do what she would not do. Linda was a passionate, tireless crusader for the environment and social justice. Linda served on the Board of the Steps Coalition, a social justice coalition, the Board of the MS Chapter Sierra Club, was a delegate to the National Board of Council of Leaders, and was extremely active in local and state politics. Privately she enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing for family and friends.
Services will be Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 10:00 am with visitation from 9 - 10 am. Following the service at the church friends of Linda are invited to join the family at 12 noon on the Ship Island Excursion to scatter her ashes.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Sierra Club.

Linda would phone me and leave a message that she was coming my way. She would stop in for beans and rice as I always had that on hand. She would spend the night and I would leave her sleeping as I was working for Sta-home Hospice at the time. Once, she came for a week. She brought her sewing machine. I have never seen anyone so talented. She was making outfits with hats to match for a Mark's daughter in New York state. I fed her and she sewed. I would leave her up sewing until the wee hours of the night. This was her respite. Louie Miller phoned and had a speaking engagement for her to do in Oxford, MS. Off she would go. She was brilliant. She was devoted to the Sierra Club. Her phone had numbers in it that would surprise you. She probably had the president's personal number in it! I marched with her one time on the streets of Meridian and she "wanted" to het arrested! It would be good, she said. I was not interested in that! Her star shines brightly in the heavens.

Linda spent many nights and weekends with me. Some were because of the Kemper Lignite plant but many were for her respite as she had busy work with the Sierra Club. She loved my beans and rice. One weekend she brought her sewing machine. I just fed her and she sewed. I took her to Carolyn's in DeKalb and she couldn't believe the fabric store "out in the middle of nowhere". She could really sew. She was a night person and I would go to bed and leave her to it. In the morning, I would tip toe around so she could sleep in. There is no cell service out here in the middle of the forest;therefore, she could really rest. Ir was my good fortune to know her. May she rest in peace.

Linda St. Martin was a committed democratic leader who served her party and her community without compromise.
Linda's commitment to service, her passion for the environment,her dedication to the party, her loyalty to her friends, her desire to see everyone succeed, all point to a life well lived. She never backed down, she never gave up, until something stronger than her force-medical complications- took our friend from us. She was my mentor and my friend. I'll see you on the bus,Linda

Linda and I became friends due to me being given a wrong number. I was trying to reach a pastor in DeLisle and the number I was given had a couple of numbers transposed. After leaving a message at the number I was given, I received a phone call from a women telling me I had the wrong number. She tried to find the correct number for me and we had a wonderful conversation. After hanging up, I realized I hadn't even asked her name. I immediately called her back and asked her name. She said Linda St. Martin. I thanked her again for being so helpful and asked if I could pray with her. She told me yes, that she was beginning chemo the following week. For the next couple of weeks, I called on a regular basis to check on her. The last time I called, I talked to her daughter, Ashley, and was told that Linda was in ICU. Today I called the hospital to check on Linda and they said no one by that name was there, my husband thought to look her up on the internet and we found the obituary. I am sad to know that I will never get to meet my new friend on this earth, but I will look forward to seeing her one day in heaven. God had a divine appointment for each of us that day and I will forever be grateful for opportunity to call Linda my friend.

We were friends from an early age. I think of the times we would walk from Pass Road to the beach to swim in a pool or play Goofy Golf. We would attend CYO dances at Our Lady of Fatima. And of course school at Fernwood & Biloxi High. There are few people that remain a friend forever. But Linda did and she will remain in my heart always. I will miss her.
