Debbie & Family,

I served on the USS Turner Joy during the same years Garry did. Although we came from different parts of the US, Garry and I "hit it off" and become very good friends and enjoyed many good times together in our travels and deployments during the Viet Nam era. In fact,we shared an apt. together in Long Beach,California for a few months with a couple of other shipmates during a period our ship was in port for an extended period of time. I did get to see Garry several years ago when our ship held a reunion in Baton Rouge. This fall we will be hosting our ship's reunion here in Minneapolis and I was so hopefull that Garry would decide to attend. Please know, that as we always do, we will recognize and honor Garry and other shipmates who have passed on for their service in the United States Navy.

My Sincere Sympathy to you and your family.

Sincerely,
Dale Sheveland

SO sorry for your family.Mr Welford was certainly a man of honor and bravery. He was on the job, not sitting behind a desk delegating the job to others. I know at this time God is the great comforter for you, but I hope it helps to know others care.

Angel

July 25, 2010

An Angel left Heaven just the other day,
Through the countryside of George County
He softly made his way,
On the scene the Angel had but to say,
“The Lord saw you and he wept, He sent me straight to you,
For just like you my Brother, I am an Officer too.”
Unfurled wings wrapped around the Sheriff of the land
The Angel held the Sheriff’s hand showing him the way,
And there in the light of heaven the Lord and all His Angels
Welcomed home the Sheriff of the land.

“Your duty has not ended, Your work is not yet through,
The gold deputy star you still wear with added angel wings so new,
A beautiful halo around your head, and here is what I need you to do,
You no longer patrol just the streets of George County,
For everywhere at once you could not be,
You now help me always to be able to watch over everyone,
friends, brother officers and your family”

Just then a call came in “Sheriff, where are you?”
And he replied “I had a call to make in heaven, go ahead”
“We miss you 10-4”
The Sheriff smiled and said “10-4, I miss you too.”
The Sheriff turned to the Lord and was just about to speak,
But the Lord who already knew and had heard the people weep,
“Yes I know my Son, Go ahead, there’s lots for you to do”

An Angel left Heaven just the other day,
Through the countryside of George County
He softly made his way,
On the scene of every tear the Angel had but to say,
“The Lord saw you and he wept, He sent me straight to you,
I was the Sheriff of the land, a husband, a father, a grand father, a brother, a fellow officer and friend,
Now I am your Guardian Angel, my unfurled wings will always be wrapped
Around you, I’ll always hold your hand.”

Just then a call came in “Sheriff, we love you. 10-4”
The Angel smiled “10-4 I love you all too”

To the family and law enforcement family of Sheriff Garry Welford, I am sorry for your loss. Eventhough most of us cannot imagine the terrible loss you are facing, George county has lost a wonderful sheriff. I appreciate his full-time effort to combat the drug problem so rampant in our county. He gave his life to protect others and we cannot ever show enough gratitude. Our prayers are being said and I hope your family find comfort in them. David and Beth Stevens and David and Alex Turner.

The members of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office in Inverness, Fl., who responded to George County after hurricane Katrina, would like to take this time to tell the family and friends of Sheriff Welford that you have our deepest sympathy and are in our prayers. When we first met Sheriff Welford during our deployment, we knew right off the bat, that he was a man that had great strength and courage. He accepted our assistance without missing a beat, and made every one of us feel as if we were part of his team. We all developed great friendships within the agency that we will never forget. From the morning assignment meetings, to the dinners that we shared, to the lasting friends we made, it was all part of his plan to make sure the citizens of George County and his men and women were taken care of. Although our meeting Sheriff Welford and the members of his agency was brief, he will never be forgotten. Being the man that he was, I'm sure he is now serving a new assignment at the right hand of the lord. He was respected by everyone we came in contact with during our stay and it's with pride that we say thank you Sheriff for taking care of us while we were there, and for giving the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the citizens. Take care our Brother, we will see you again.

The Deputies of the Citrus County Sheriff's Office in Florida, that had the previlage of responding to George County after Hurricane Katrina would first like to send our deepest sympathy and prayers to the family of Sheriff Welford and all officers and employee's at the agency during this terrible time. Altough we only knew Sheriff Welford for the short time we were there, we will never forget him and the men and women at the Agency. While there, we all developed many friendships during that terrible time. Coming from a small County ourselves, Sheriff Welford made all of us feel as if we were part of his team. The morning meetings for assignments, the dinners that we shared and the brotherhood that we'll never forget, are only a few of the things experienced by us all. It was a pleasure to meet and work for such a strong and proud man. Our prayers are with everyone there. Sheriff Welford has left this earth for a new assignment at the right hand of the LORD. I'm more than positive, that he will be a great leader there, just as he was here.
