Albert Hamilton Obituary

Albert J. Hamilton of Fort Lauderdale passed away suddenly in his home February 16, 2016. He was 75, having been born August 24, 1940 in Youngstown, Ohio, to the late Hilary and Sarah Hamilton. He is survived by his long-time partner, Martin Kaplan, daughter Sarah (John) Magill, son Brian (Suzanne) Hamilton, daughter Christine (Richard) Turner, and son Patrick (Stephanie) Hamilton, twelve grandchildren, and many close friends. Al spent his professional life in higher education, as a history professor, then dean and ultimately academic vice president at colleges in the Midwest and Northeast. His published work includes the book, The Catholic Journey Through Ohio. Al earned his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from the University of Notre Dame. Upon retirement, Al moved to Fort Lauderdale where he engaged in several volunteer efforts, including ushering at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts; relished hosting parties, as well as being a guest; and read on a wide array subjects, but preferred mysteries.

Al and I knew each other as undergrads at ND and all through grad school. We received our PhDs consecutively from Fr. Ted in 1967 and he was the best man in our wedding. I always remember his great sense of humor. May he rest in peace. Bob and Paula Henry

As undergraduates at the University of Notre Dame, Al and I had a lot of fun working together as news announcers on WSND, the student radio station. I will always remember him as a fine fellow. May he rest in peace.

Al was my college roommate and close friend through graduate school. I was shocked and saddened by the news of his death. He was a vigorous spirit, dedicated scholar, and good person.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow attendee and the family at this time. Attendees are recognized on the theory "if it's important to some to mention in an obit, then we can spare a few prayers". Perhaps, the time at MC was both formative and important to our comrade. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
