Theresa Henes Obituary

Henes, Theresa, died on November 25, 2012 after 93 years of living life to the fullest and more than 50 years of bringing joy to thousands through dance. Terry was born on August 29, 1919, the youngest of six children of Morris and Rebecca Terdiman. A native New Yorker, Terry studied acrobatics and tap dance at Ned Wayburn's School of Dance in Manhattan. For 27 years, Terry ran her own dance studio in New Hyde Park on Long Island, where she taught the Elks Club and the Knights of Columbus. In 1972, Terry and her husband Murray moved to South Florida where she founded the National Dance Teachers Association of America and created institutions such as "Dancing Under the Stars", a beloved monthly dance event in the City of Boca Raton. Terry's passion for ballroom dancing and her deep beliefs as to its benefits carried through to her many loyal students who truly adored her. Terry received awards for her work from Palm Beach County, the City of Delray Beach, and both the mayor of Deerfield Beach and the mayor of Boca Raton have designated May 4th as "Terry Henes Day". Terry loved to dance and to teach others how to dance - and she brought her gifts and boundless energy to each class until her retirement as a full-time instructor at 87 years old. Terry is survived by her son Michael and his wife Karen; her grandchildren Rachel and Jonathan; her great-grandchildren Sam, Ellie, Charlotte, and Cece; and the many students and friends who benefited from her incredible spirit and dance instruction. A Commemoratives display will be set up for the month of January at the Boca Raton Community Center 201 W. Palmetto Park Road. A funeral was held on November 27, 2012.
