Carhart, Charles Edward Sr. of Vineland, NJ and a resident of Hialeah/Dania Beach since 1959, died May 20. He is survived by daughter Leslie; sons C.E. "Chip" Jr. and Christopher; step-mother Jeanette; and sister-in-law Jane (James) Anderson, Predeceased by his wife Barbara, and daughter Kyle. Well known in the local marine industry, renowned in the music community, Ed was an accomplished jazz, big band, and symphony musician. His favorite stories were of Valley Forge Military Academy, Julliard, Carhart Construction, his Army service, hydroplane racing championship, music and family. Talented, hard working, and eccentric; our family counted on him and he was there for us. We are proud of and love him. A celebration of life is intended at a future date. I'm thinking about Leslie and family at this time. Life long friends. Ed was just a spectacular man.

Mr. Carhart was my childhood friend's dad. He was one of the fun fathers and his sons and daughters loved him unconditionally. Spending time at the Carharts was a real inspiration for a kid who had creative impulses and didn't know how to tap them. My thoughts are with Leslie, Christopher and Chip as they honor Mr. Carhart's memory.

I had the privilege of performing with Ed many times over the years and I am richer for it. He was always upbeat and lifted the band with his attitude and playing. With his "Dixie Dawgs" it was a given that making good music that folks would enjoy was important, but he made sure to let us know it was just as important to have a fun doing it (and we did!). Ed took pride and ethusiastically shared news about his family and various projects, be it boats or music. It is hard to believe that he's not with us now. His inspiration certainly lives on in those of us who where fortunate enough to have known and learned from him.

Ed Carhart was simply the coolest man that ever first came into my life. Leslie and I practically grew up together back in Hialeah and I got to know the family well. He was gracious, generous, had a great sense of adventure and still a little wild streak. He surprised me in that he also enjoyed "our music", a rarity for any grow-up back then. I am sorry to hear of his passing but know that he lived his life to the fullest and in his own way. The quality of the music "up there" has just kicked up a notch. My heartfelt sympathies go to the Carhart family.
