George Thackeray Obituary

George Edward Thackeray, 94 of Pompano Beach passed away on Sunday, September 1, 2013. George was born in Ossining, NY. At age 19 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was soon called to serve in the Pacific Ocean immediately following the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served at many locations during the war on the USS President Adams - off the shores of Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa, to name a few. He was a Boatswain's Mate, but his proudest memory was that of serving as a Navy Frogman involved in underwater demolition. He worked for the USPS for over 30 years, soon after moving to FL in 1952. He was afraid he may stagnate after retiring, and then went to work for the BPOE of Pompano Beach, until forced into retirement at the tender age of 91. He had 3 siblings, Doreen (Prochaska), still residing in CA, Rita (Picciano) deceased, and an identical twin brother, William, who preceded him in death several years ago. He is survived by his loving wife, Martha of 68 years, his daughter Sandy and son-in-law Bob, who he always considered to be a son. He is also survived by 3 grandsons, RJ (Shannon), Chris (Melissa), and Bryan, and a great-grandson Brayden. He also had a special niece, Sherry Craig, who was almost like another daughter. He was exceedingly proud of each and every one for all they have accomplished thus far in their lives. All in all he was humble, enjoyed the simple things in life, and the times he spent with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed traveling to Las Vegas, which he often did more than once a year with Martha. George - we heard there are slot machines in Heaven! The family will receive friends on Friday, September 6, 2013 from 3:00 P.M. until 5:00 P.M. with a service at 4:00 P.M. at FOREST LAWN FUNERAL HOME, 200 West Copans Road, Pompano Beach, FL 33064.

Sandy & Bob,
What a wonderful long life Papa George had. He was so blessed, a long wonderful life with his Martha, his Grandchildren & handsome Great Grandson. Truly a lucky man. And he was Grandpa to our children. Thank you for sharing him with us. The pictures you posted are fantastic, I loved looking at so many happy, family & fun times. He'll always be in our hearts.
Love you all,
Jan & Jeff

Martha:
I'm so sorry for your loss and you have my deepest sympathy. You don't know me, but George and I became friends back when he was my mailman back in 1957. I remember looking forward to his visits to my office so that we could spend a few minutes each day chatting about his daughter, Sandy who was his pride and joy. He shared a few stories about what he did in the war and I know I considered him a real hero. And we both liked bowling so we talked about our highs and lows in the game. As the years went on, I lost track of George, but I've never forgotten him. He was such a nice man and a good friend. After 65 years of marriage, I know you will miss him, Martha, but I pray that God will be close to you and your family in the days ahead.
Sincerely,
Jan Wetherbee
