Robert Abraham Miles

Robert Abraham Miles, 22, died in a ski accident at Eldora Mountain Resort in Nederland, CO, on December 8, 2014. Robert was born on October 9, 1992, in Hollywood, FL, to Robert C. Miles and Amanda G. Miles of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He is survived by his Mother, twin brother, Michael Dennis Miles of Fort Lauderdale, FL, step-brother Dennis Miles of Deland, FL and step-sister Lyn Miles of Acworth, GA. He was preceded in death by his father in 2004. Robert earned a full scholarship at the University of Colorado upon his 2011 graduation from Taravella High School in Coral Springs, FL. He was a senior at CU in Boulder, double majoring in Bassoon Music Performance and Environmental Engineering. Robert was recently elected to his second term as president of the engineering fraternity, Theta Tau. Robert was inspired and mentored in music by John Nista at Ramblewood Middle School, Neil Jenkins at Taravella, and most recently Yoshi Ishikawa at the University of Colorado. Robert won numerous honors and awards for his bassoon playing as a soloist and a member of various orchestras, bands, quintets, quartets and duets. Robert was Captain of the Taravella Tennis Team, played soccer and basketball, and was on the Debate Team. He enjoyed the beach, hiking, bike riding, skiing and being with his friends and family. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan but the CU Buffs were his favorites. In his short life, Robert touched many. He was quiet as he carefully observed people and the world around him. He always gave from his heart as his empathy and thoughtfulness were unequaled. He was gentle and generous and kind. His quick wit and beautiful smile were Robert's trademarks. His accident is a tragedy. A celebration of Robert's life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood, 1530 Hollywood Blvd., at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 20. The Robert A. Miles Bassoon Scholarship Fund has been established at the University of Colorado 301 UCB, Boulder, CO 80309.
