Hazel Alexander Obituary

Hazel Chapman Alexander

Hazel Chapman Alexander, 99, passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 in Tallahassee, Florida. Hazel was truly a unique individual and an inspiration to all who knew her. A loving mother and doting grandmother, she was always ready to listen, and to help where she could. Born in Plant City, FL, Hazel grew up in Tampa where she graduated from Hillsborough High School and worked as an executive and legal secretary. She married Thomas Alexander in 1942. She was active in charitable organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy, and a member of Tampa Little Theatre. After Tom's death in 1966 she worked for the American Cancer Society, and when the opportunity presented itself, Hazel moved to Washington, D.C. to work. While in Washington, she worked for Congressmen Bob Sikes and Don Fuqua and then moved to Tallahassee in 1979 to be with her family after the birth of her grandson. After arriving in Tallahassee, she put her many talents to good use. Hazel logged over 4,000 volunteer hours at Tallahassee Community Hospital (now Capital Regional Medical Center) and in 1985 was nominated for Woman of the Year. She volunteered with the FSU Auction, and was an active participant and held several offices, including President, in CRMC;s H2U organization, also known as Senior Friends. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 60 years. For her family and her friends, the world is diminished by her passing, but we are all better for having known her. She is survived by her daughter Kathy Austin (John) of Tallahassee, FL, grandson Ian Austin (Heather) and great-granddaughter Mackay Austin of Winter Park, FL, a niece Eve Klien (Mel) of Pahrump, NV, and a nephew Mac Roddye (Gwen) of Knoxville, TN.A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 4, 2011 at 11:00 AM, at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home 1737 Riggins Road (850)877-8191. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Big Bend Hospice or a charity of your choice.

I was going out of town when I read about hazel's passing. She was such a lovely lady with a great sense of humor. I knew her for many, many years in Beta Sigma Phi, even though she was in anotehr chapter. We all looked on her as a great sister. She will be missed.

Kathy

Sorry to hear of your mom's passing. It's been too many years but I still remember fun times in Tampa.
