While we sadly lost dear John and dear Sally, we reconnected with the little girls that also enriched our lives at FSU in late 50s and early 60s. We cherish the continued Carey connection and share their sorrow.

i met dr. carey as a student in the "introduction to the new testament" course he taught at FSU. he was my most memorable professor. he was kind, promoted discourse, encouraged open-mindedness, and helped me to develop logical thinking and clarity of thought and expression. his many, many acts of compassion in class made an impression on me that i carry with me to this day. perhaps most importantly, he was quick to see the good in his students and share that vision with them.
condolences to his family.

My wife and I met at FSU in the Congregational Church group that John started in the Baptist Student Union. His leadership and his elevating religious dialogue was responsible for making it a lifetime changing experience. We kept in touch over the ensuing years. We have wonderful memories of John, Sarah Catherine and Mary Lynn. Our sympathies go out to all the family.

John Carey was interested in his students. He cared about our character as much as he cared about our intellectual development. That is both rare and wonderful. But his gentle nature and kind heart are what I will remember most.

I am sad to read of Dr. John Carey's passing. More than my Bible professor, he was my friend when he took charge of the leadership of the Wesley Foundation at FSU in 1960, in the absence of his dear friend and collegue, Austin Hollady, the Director, who was incapacitated by a heart attack. Dr. Carey counseled and preached to hundreds of Methodist students during Austin's recuperation. I still have several of Dr. Carey's sermons to the Wesley students: I will cherish them as long as i live. He was a brilliant scholar!

I remember Dr. Carey fondly as my Religions in a America professor at ASC. He had an ability to make studying religion fascinating and was always available to his students. We all learned so much from him and it is from him that I gained an appreciation for studying different philosophies/ religions. He will be very missed.

Dear Beth,
I always felt so honored to be around your Daddy. He was absolutely so very gentle, so loving, he would always thank me for anything I did, such as making him an appointment, greeting him as he walked through the front door, offering him coffee or even water, he had such a sweetness about him. He always treated me with such kindness, always asking about my family, especially my boys, and always sharing how blessed he was and how he adored each of his beautiful girls. Every time I would ask your Daddy about you, before he would say anything, all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he would have the sweetest smile on his face, with such a twinkle in his eyes. I can remember wondering what it would be like to have a Daddy like yours, and would he break into a smile if someone asked about me? Unfortunately, my Daddy died when I was 8 years old so I was always very aware of how other Daddy's treated their Daughter's. I do remember, as if it was yesterday, when I began working in the practice, there was a day the phone was ringing off the hook, a patient was at the front window, trying to interrupt me while I was trying to schedule an appointment for your Daddy's next visit, and out of nowhere, your Daddy ask me if he needed to talk with Dr Hughes about working me so hard? I almost broke down in tears. Honestly, I couldn't believe anyone could be that kind. From that moment on, your Daddy won my heart!!
One of the greatest gifts in my entire lifetime, was being hired by Dr Hughes to be the office manager in his dental practice. From the very first moment, I met some of the most incredible people who would make such an amazing impact on my life. Beth, you, your Daddy, your Mama, Sarah, and Marylynn, have always been so very special to me. No matter, that it has been so many years since I last saw any of you, each of you truly made me a better person and I will always be indebted and grateful for your very precious family.
As I celebrate your Daddy's life, with all of my heart, I thank him for making me feel special, and for always treating me with the upmost respect and appreciation.
Sweet Beth, you are in my thoughts, my prayers, and I truly love you with all of my heart.❤
