You are still remembered as a legend in psychology and at Florida A&M University. Just as important you are remembered as a great father, husband, and mentor to many of us who dared to follow in your footsteps. To you we are eternally grateful to you. Aubrey Perry and the entire FAMU family.

It is with great sadness that I must endure the death of my second cousin. When my grandfather (Richard Awkard) died, all of my Awkard history died with him. The Masons in Harrisonburg informed me of Joseph's death today and I am feeled with emptiness. Not only because he was a family member, but because he left such a great legacy that I never was able to know, experience or witness. Brenda

All the years that I knew your dad, he always showed warmth, compassion, and authenticity. I know that he loved life, and was so very proud of his family. His family was equally proud of him. You'll be missed, Joe Awkard.

Dr. Joseph Awkard has always been an inspiration to me and to many of the students whose lives he touched during his tenure as chairman of the psychology department at Florida A&M University. He had a caring and loving spirit and his legacy shall live on forever. I shall never forget the day an 86 year old grandmother came to see him and asked him to look after her grandson whom she had brought to college. The grandmother shared that her grandson was the first in their family to ever go to college . Dr. Awkard immediately responded with a kind smile and assuring voice that he would do all he could to help the young man succeed. The young man graduated four years later with honors. I thank God for Dr. Awkard for he changed many lives because of the concern and kindness he showed. I shall never forget him.

In additon to Joe's accomplishments in the academic realm, he connected easily with anyone who came in contact with him. He touched our lives with his warmth, compassion and ready laugh ("yeah....yeah!"...tagged on at the end). Yeah, Joe, we'll miss you.

My brother Jeff and I sang in the choir with Joe at Killearn United Methodist Church in Tallahassee when we were only teenagers (almost 30 years ago). We will never forget how sweet he was to us. His cheerful demeanor and huge grin were always a blessing. Heaven is lucky to get him!

In the comparitively short time that I knew Joe, I learned from him a great deal about true dignity. He was an educated and well respected man, but he is among the most humble of men I have ever known. I am thankful for having known him. The Choir of Angels has been blessed with an addition to its bass section. Godspeed, Joe!

Our NC Perry family, Alesia and Kenneth Perry, with our daughters Alexis and Kelsey Perry, would like to extend our loving support to the Awkard family, but also express our sadness in the passing of Joe. We express sadness with a note that we all know he is in the best place and is smiling down with Love to his family and friends. Joe was very important in the life of my father, Aubrey Perry Sr., and his influence and interaction helped shape the entire Perry family: me (Kenny Perry), Aubrey Jr, and Vannessa.

Love to you all, and our hearts, minds, and prayers are with the Awkard Family. (Ken Perry and family in NC)
