CLEMENT, John Christy

passed away August 27, 2018. Born Jan. 2, 1923 in Quantico, VA, John was a proud Marine who served in WWII and received a Purple Heart for wounds received on Iwo Jima. Graduate of Choate and from Yale in 1944, he was a community activist: May 2001 St. Petersburg Senior Hall of Fame inductee, St. Petersburg Rotarian of the Year Award in 2005. He served on the Boards of the UU Church of St. Petersburg, the Village of Tierra Verde, the Tierra Verde Assoc. and the Suncoast Tampa Bay Memorial Society. A long-term member of ASPEC at Eckerd College, his volunteering included assisting parolees to find employment, as a Road Patrolman for the St. Petersburg Police Dept., serving Meals on Wheels, visiting Suncoast Hospice patients, and reading books and telling adventure stories of his childhood to first graders. John was an avid tennis player at Lakewood and Bartlett Park. He was well known for his great sense of humor, on and off the court. A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held later this fall.
