Michael PICKERING Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 5 to Nov. 19, 2017.
PICKERING, Michael Joseph

was born in Clarksdale, MS, November 18, 1931, and died peacefully surrounded by family and friends October 28, 2017.

He embraced his life with strength of character and purpose.

Michael exchanged his Eagle Scout uniform for that of a Navy Corpsman in The Korean War, ultimately achieving rank of Lt. Commander. It was in the military that his passion for medicine and healing began, graduating first in his class at The University of Florida Medical School. He concluded his military service as a decorated flight surgeon.

Upon completing his naval service he returned to his alma mater as a professor, and is a member of the esteemed University of Florida Hall of Fame. Even upon his retirement, when asked about his 48 years of practicing medicine, he remarked simply and unabashedly, "Going to work everyday was like going to a candy store."

Dr. Pickering served not only the patients entrusted to his care, but in an international manner, educating and lecturing both current and future nephrologists and internal medicine practitioners. He was an active member of the Tampa Bay Latin American Medical Society for 28 years and honored to be chosen as their Dr. of the Year for 2002.

Throughout his distinguished career he was President of Florida Society of Internal Medicine, Florida Society of Nephrology, and most recently awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Society of Nephrology.

Michael's hands were for healing, but his heart longed for adventures, and the faster the better; be it driving racecars at Talledega and Daytona or flying down a Colorado Black Diamond slope. Michael lived and loved life's journeys. His quest of learning molded his travel plans, with museums and local art galleries at the top of each itinerary. He treasured time spent with his companions at Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club and Tampa Yacht and Country Club. He was competitive. If you were keeping score, he wanted to be the best. That was both helpful and hurtful with his beloved game of golf.

Most beloved to Michael were his cherished family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Micky; daughter, Pricilla (Kim) Pickering Backus; grandchildren, Courtney (Hunter) Norton, Jacquelyn (Brian) Harrison, Kelsey Backus; and great-grandchildren, Lawson, Holt, and Harper.

A memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 906 S. Orleans Ave., Tampa, FL, December 2, at 9:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Lifepath Hospice.

Michael was a good friend. I owe him the opportunity to come to Tampa and work with him and my good friends, Orlando Castillo and Jayesh Shah. May our Lord and Savior shine his face upon him and give him peace for ever. Thank you Michael and Thank you Micky Sue for your friendship.

Michael was the man who embrace me as his partner, his friend and his brother that he said he never had. I really felt very honored to be all of the above for him.
Throughout his sincere affection to me and my family (wife and sons) he also transmitted his affection to all my fellow Latino doctors as well as the Tampa Bay Latin-American Medical Society.
With him and his lovely wife Micky Sue we enjoyed a truly multiple unforgettable time together, here in Tampa and multiple other places of the world as he loved traveling.
I am so sad that he has left us from this world.

Dr. Pickering was my nephrologist when I was diagnosed with membranous glomerulonephritis in 1977 after he did a kidney biopsy. I continued to see him even during my years as a traveling nurse and for a couple of years after deciding to relocate in Huntington Beach, Ca. He was always so kind and caring. I am forever so thankful for his expert, loving, and kind care of me. As my mother always says, Dr. Pickering saved my life. He was also very caring to my parents who were with me when he gave me the diagnosis and plan of care. I loved and admired him. He always went out of his way for me. I am so very sorry for your loss. He was a great man!

Micky, Malio and I were so saddened to hear of Michael's passing. He was such a friendly and personable person. It was a priviledge to have known him as a loyal customer at Malio's and then as a caring neighbor at Seddon Cove.
Our prayers are with you and your family.

Just by reading the obituary regarding Mr. Pickering, my heart is touched and moved. It would have been an honor to cross paths with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family during this time of loss. I wanted to share a few words of comfort from God's word the bible that helped me get through tragedies in my life. One of my favorite text is found at Isa 41:10. It shows how God will take hold of our right hand and really help us. Its a beautiful text I think you might enjoy. May the peace of God carry you through this difficulty. deepest sympathies.

This such a personal loss to me as well as healthcare. This man was a brilliant physician, mentor and friend. I began working with him at Lakeland Hospital when I was 20 years old. He trained and mentored me in dialysis and I continued to work with him for almost 30 years. I will cherish his friendship and guidance. He was so full of life, loved Mickey, his family and his friends. I will always be thankful for knowing him. Darlene Jalbert
