Daniel Walbolt Obituary

WALBOLT Daniel R., Sr. passed peacefully in his sleep on the morning of April 15, 2014. A lawyer, educator, fly fisherman, avid Seminoles fan, and great lover of ribticklers, his greatest achievement in his life was as an exceptional husband, father and grandfather. He leaves his wife of almost 50 years, Sylvia, a son, Dan Jr., three de jure grandchildren, Ryan, Davis, and Leela, and two de facto grandchildren, Arlo and Cage. His two brothers, Tom and Mike, survive him, as do his loving nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dan's memory to the Dean's Discretionary Fund, St. Peter's Cathedral, 140 4th Street N, St. Petersburg, Florida 33701; or to the Dan Walbolt Endowment Fund, Department of History, Office of the Dean, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida 32308. Services will be held at St. Peter's Cathedral, at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, 2014. FSU baseball hats are welcome.

As my "boss" for twenty-some years at U.S.F. , and my friend, it was a pleasure to be associated with Dan. He always had faith and trust in how I managed my Department, He was always a supporter of the Staff and more important took a personal interest in how they were doing. I think he really enjoyed interacting with our Resident Assistants especially during training at Chinsegut Hill. On the personal level we enjoyed O'Keefs, and especially going to boat shows. On one occasion he called me up to say we were going for a boat ride where he had his boat on the Crystal River. Just one example of the kind of man Dan was. I am really going to miss him and our lunches at O'Keefes.

I am so sad to hear the news of Dan's passing. I am so sorry I just found out today and I missed his services. I have such great memories and respect for Dan and Sylvia. As a young attorney at Carlton and Fields I idolized the two of them and still do to this day. I remember stories as to how the two first met. What a lovely marriage and loving couple. My deepest sympathies and love to Sylvia and family. Lillian Reyes Joyce

I've known Dan over half my life, meeting him when I was in Student Government at USF in 1988, and then getting to know him much better when I became Student Body President in '89. Too many memories to share here, but the relationship continued, including a memorable boat ride well after graduation while I was a law student. About once a year I'd see or email Dan and he always wanted to know how was the family. I will miss him terribly but am blessed to count him as one of the most important people in my life. My thoughts are with Sylvia and Dan Jr. and the entire Walbolt family

Mrs. Walbolt, I am so very sorry for the loss of Mr. Walbolt. I rode at Woodbridge with Leslie. I have thought of your family often and still see most of the girls from the barn. We talk of Leslie whenever we are together. I hope that you take some small comfort that Leslie and now your husband will be in my daily prayers. My dad, Jim Dickinson, and I remember Mr. Walbolt as just being a really nice guy. My deepest sympathies.

I did not know Dan but many of my family did from working at USF for many years. My mother Theresa Buckley spoke highly of Dan and considered him a great asset to the university and it's family. She passed on but I know she would want me to express her deepest sympathy.

Sylvia, my sister just called me to tell my about Dan. You know, I never called him Dan, and, as he might have said, "It hurts my mouth" to say Dan instead of Mr. Walbolt. All of the years I worked for him, he was the best person I knew. I admired and loved him, and I have said many times, the three best men I've known in my life are my husband, Walter, my father, and Dan Walbolt. He taught me so much, mostly about love of family. Leslie and Danny were the light of his life. You both have been examples to me. I grieve with you. I often wanted to get in touch when I was in Tampa. I wish I had. My thoughts are with you. If I leave tonight, I can be there tomorrow. I am going to try. Love to you and your family.
