Russell Minardi Obituary

MINARDI, Russell Joseph, 76, passed away Friday, October 2, 2009. Russ was born December 12, 1932, in Tampa to Rosalia "Lil" Ferlita and Joseph A. Minardi, M.D. He graduated from Jesuit High School and attended the University of Florida, earning degrees in building construction and architecture. He was elected president of Phi Delta Theta and during his tenure, the organization received the highest award for their community service. At UF, he partnered in tennis with Billy Poe, former Tampa mayor, winning the intramural tennis championship. Russ so loved UF that in 1969, he was instrumental in changing the football uniforms. His slogan was, "Go Gators, Shed the Blues." To this day, the orange helmet remains a significant part of the uniform. Russ served in the U.S. Marine Corps, achieving the rank of captain. He practiced architecture in Tampa, with homes featured in "Southern Living" and "House Beautiful," and he received a national award from "House and Home." He was commissioned by former mayor, Dick Greco, to design the Tampa Public Library in Ybor City and was also the architect for the Tampa Dog Track. Russ truly lived a full, adventurous life. Even at 76, he could be found cruising around town on his scooter, making friends with the locals, and of course, lying about his age. "Of all his achievements, he will be most remembered for being a wonderful, loving father and grand-father, who always made us laugh." In his own words, he wrote, "The good feeling is having a supportive family and to have been a part of so many positive things. And to my last breath it will always be ' Go Gators and thank you God for a good ride.' " Russ was predeceased by his parents, Lil Ferlita and Joseph A. Minardi, M.D., and his sister, Antonia "Bee Bee" Robbins. He is survived by his former wife and friend, Norma Minardi Cohen; his daughters, Anne Marie, Beverly Ann and Cathy Lynn Minardi; grandchildren, Ashley M. Hubley, Matthew A. Minardi and Elena M. Machado; brother, S. Charles Minardi; many nieces, nephews and cousins; and a funny looking "great-granddog," Coconut "Coco," whom he spoiled rotten and to this day, has no clue how dry dog food tastes. A funeral Mass led by Monsignor Higgins, will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, October 10, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 5225 N. Himes Ave., Tampa. Wear casual attire, and if possible, orange and blue.

I always thought it strange that people will post in the newspaper notes to their loved ones who have passed away, as if they are in heaven reading the newspaper, catching up on the sports page, and of course, reading messages from their relatives left behind. Still, here I am posting, wishing you could read it...crazy how I miss you sometimes Dad.

Not a day goes by without thinking of Russ. I have one wall in my bedroom dedicated to his art work. I miss him every day. We worked together for almost 3 years at TFM. Even though he was unable to work much, I always kept a place open for him. Karen
