ALAN DANFORTH Obituary


ALAN P. DANFORTH , formerly of East Orange, New Jersey and Katonah, New York died at Hospice House in Vero Beach, Florida on the 4th of July after a year long battle with throat cancer. He had been a resident of Vero Beach since 2010, coming from Stuart, Florida. A lifetime member of the 1st Division of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served with distinction and received the Purple Heart for wounds incurred during the Okinawa campaign in 1945. Mr. Danforth was a graduate of The Taft School ('44) and Yale University ('49). He was a pioneer in the frozen food industry with Snow Crop Frozen Foods, which later became a division of the Minute Maid Corporation and subsequently a division of the Coca Cola Corporation. Before retiring to Florida, he was Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Lea and Perrins, Inc., and later President of All World Brand Foods, Inc., Stamford, Connecticut. Mr. Danforth was a two time past President of The Historical Society of Martin County, and for many years on the Board of Trustees. In Stuart, Florida, he represented The Business Journal, The Senior Journal and The Business News. He was a member of the Board of Governors of Mariner Sands Country Club where he resided for over twenty-five years. Later, he was a member of the board of Directors of the Auxiliary of Martin Memorial Hospital, where he served for many years as co-chairman, and later as Chairman of the volunteers serving in the Emergency Room. He also served on many committees for the Auxiliary. Upon moving to Vero Beach, Mr. Danforth became a volunteer in the Emergency Room in the Indian River Medical Center. Residing at the Regency Park Senior Living residence, he became a member of the residents' board and later President. He was a member of the Vero Beach Country Club, The Yale Club of N.Y.C., and a past member of the Bedford Golf & Tennis Club, and Mariner Sands Country Club of Stuart. He leaves his wife, Mallory Webb Danforth and four children: Alan P. Danforth, Jr. (Kathleen), Penelope Danforth, Nicholas W. Danforth and Kevin Webb Crane as well as ten grandchildren. He was predeceased by his son Michael P. Danforth. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date.
