Scott Mehringer Obituary

Scott H. Mehringer, 54, of Auburn, died Monday, October 18, 2010 at UMass Memorial Hospital, Worcester, after a 2 year courageous battle with colon cancer.

He was born in Orange, New Jersey, son of the late Norman and Helen (Izzo) Mehringer, moving to Worcester as a child, and later to Northborough, MA.

He leaves his best friend and wife of 25 years, Margaret A. "Peggy" (Hickey) Mehringer of Auburn; his beloved son, Matthew of Auburn; his loving sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law; Ellen and Sandy Carder of Sudbury, MA, and Maureen and Patrick Looney of Auburn; his mother-in-law, Margaret Hickey of Auburn; his nephew, Daniel Hickey, his nieces, Erin Hickey, Katherine and Jennifer Carder and Maura and Margaret Looney. He also leaves his sister, Susan Taggart of Arizona and Costa Rica and her daughter Sky.

Scott was a graduate of Saint John's High School, Shrewsbury, and Boston College, Chestnut Hill. He completed his graduate work at Cambridge College. He was a dedicated and devoted teacher of Finance and Marketing at Worcester Technical High School serving as Class Advisor, DECA chaperone and was the Professional Development Coordinator. He received the Thomas Jefferson Award in May of 2010 for his outstanding contributions to his students.

Scott was a huge sports fan, staying true to his New Jersey roots with his love of the NY Giants and the Yankees. He loved vacationing in Ogunquit Maine each summer, especially his monthly getaways to the Meadowmere Resort. He enjoyed traveling, running, and was an avid reader. He was a loving, kind and giving person and was an inspiration to so many. Scott was a gentleman in every sense of the word, who adored his wife, his son, and his family.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. David Shepro and the entire staff at Commonwealth Oncology, Worcester, MA, and the nurses of 5 South UMass Memorial for the outstanding care he received. Also, the administration and staff at David Prouty High School for their amazing support; as well as WTHS

To Mr. Mehringer's Family,

I am very sorry to hear about you loss. It was a loss for everyone. He was one of nicest people I ever met. He helped me from freshman year all the way until I went to college. Always keeping us entertained with his jokes that we heard in 3rd grade. He made school fun and I looked forward to seeing and talking to him everyday. I especially liked how he got so excited when I emailed him from college. He was one of my main motivators to go to college and was always the first name I put on job applications for a reference. Usually in school kids are against the teachers, in his case, it actually hurt me when he would get aggravated. All the underclassmen will attest that I always let them know before sophomore that if they gave him a hard time they had to deal with me. I was lucky to have him as a teacher, but you guys were even luckier. I'm certain you guys had great memories with him just as I did and I hope that will help you get through the hard times your having now. I am in New Hampshire at school and I will not be able to make it to the wake and it is killing me but he has been on my mind all week and I will never forget him and what he has done for me. I wish I could make it but he knows I am thinking of him and would be there 100% if I could. Mr. Mehringer was a great man and I know you guys are proud to be a part of his family. All of you are in my prayers.

To those of us who knew Scott back at St. John's, it is not at all surprising to see the outpouring of love and affection from the students whose lives he has gone on to touch. We will always remember Scott as a great guy... funny, intelligent, athletic, soft spoken, unassuming...he was liked by one and all in our class. It is gratifying to know that Scott used his special gifts to make such a difference in so many lives. Rest in peace, Scott.

Letter to Mr. Mehringer

Blurred vision is what I had,
My future was indecisive; the plans for my Voke trade were in disarray
Then a man got me hooked on Finance, God Bless the man I met that day
Quickly I learned and excelled, you gave me the knowledge that propelled,
Me into a world of finance and marketing, even as the economy started darkening,
You went from teacher to mentor to best friend, one person I’d never forget, remember you till the end,
Sat in front of your desk for two years, never a worry for you were close by to help me out,
In life I might have lost me a bout, but you were there with guidance and assurance,
Knowing you were there for me was the greatest insurance
Everyday next to you brought a new discussion and talk of life stories,
The talks that provided me with hope from my worries,
You never lied to me and kept it straight laced; after I found out I never stopped thinking on how I could get that sickness replaced
But you stayed strong never a quitter, God dealt you a helpless hand and you played them like a winner.
I never got a chance to say bye to you on earth, and every time I think about it, it hurts
So when my time comes I’ll be saying hello to you in the afterlife, sharing our little life stories enjoying eternity in paradise
From A Life You Helped Shape for the Better,

Peggy and Matt,
As you have heard from so many and its undoubtedly true, Mr Mehringer was an amazing man! He was a friend and mentor to many. His kind and gentle personality, and the support he gave was like no other. He had such a great impact on my life and so many others. There are few teachers who years after you graduate you continue to use the lessons you learned from them in life, Mr. Mehringer was one! He always pushed me further and gave me the confidence and assurance that I could do more than I thought was possible! My success in High-school, DECA, and in my marketing career today was contributed to by him. I will carry my fond memories of him with me for the rest of my life..And every time I eat a mint I will think of him :) My thoughts and prayers are with you through this difficult time, and know that Mr Mehringer often made it known how much he loved and adored the two of you!

Truly the good die young. He was an excellent teacher and I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if it was not for Mr. Mehringer. I still cannot believe the news. He was another father to me and a main reason why I ran for DECA state office. He gave me the slogan that got me elected "the little guy, with big ideas". Now every time I think of DECA or my slogan my eyes tend to tear up. Not because of the sadness that I fee but because of the overwhelming good memories and good times I had and made with Mr. Mehringer. From singing in his class to asking for a mint because I knew he always had some stashed away in his draw. The little things are what I remember and what will always bring a smile to my face. He will surely not be forgotten.

Dear Peggy and Matt,

I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. You may not remember meeting me, but Scott is my Godfather (I am John and Liz Donoghue's oldest son). I remember seeing "Uncle Scott" regularly when I was a small child - no more than 3 or 4 years old. I remember him as a great guy who always brought fun into our house and would bring me presents as if every day was Christmas. I think of him often and will continue to do so throughout my life. He was a kind, generous and fun person to be around. I know that the thoughts and prayers of my entire family are with you during this difficult time.

There are only a handful of people you meet in a lifetime that are an inspiration. .those that have a genuine heart of gold, a shoulder to cry on – always willing to provide words of wisdom or a smile so sincere that it makes everything ok. Mr. Mehringer was one of those people and I am privileged to have known such a wonderful man. I lost my father at a very young age and through high school Mr. Mehringer became the mentor, the “father figure” that I needed – always telling me to never give up, always pushing me because he knew I could do better. He was the type of teacher that could answer any question you had (or he’d find the answer). . but a lot of his lessons came from his heart, not a textbook. He was able to share things from his life that to this day have helped me get through mine. My heart goes out to his family whom I know he adored. Words cannot describe the amazing person that he was. . . the blessing. And he will be missed by many.

To the Mehringer Family,

I am truly saddened to hear of Mr. Mehringer's passing. He was truly one of the best teachers and one of the kindest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I consider myself lucky to have been one of his students. My time at Worcester Voke was impacted greatly by Mr. Mehringer's lessons. Some of which he taught you could find in a lesson plan but many were invaluable life lessons that I still remember long after I graduated.

He was always kind, always supportive and always genuinely interested in his students and passionate and excited about teaching. He was eager for us to learn and not only do well but realize that we could always achieve more, reach higher. He made sure that we did not limit or label ourselves. He would do everything in his power to help us reach beyond what we first thought possible.

If you ever needed anything you needed only to ask, but many times you never had to. He would offer; he would insist.

I was able to visit Mr. Mehringer for a short while at the new school just before summer. It had been ten years since I was one of his students. He was still glowing when it came to talking about his students. He never lost his fire about teaching, he never stopped caring about his students learning and succeeding. It was inspiring to witness. It was another lesson learned: Love what you do. He did without question and I will be forever grateful for that.

The lessons he taught will live on in me and all of his students. Some were small. When I fasten my tie in the morning. I remember it was Mr. Mehringer who taught me how to do it first on the day of competition. Others were life changing. In twenty years I hope that I still find myself loving what I do. I hope I can glow with pride in all that I accomplished as he did on that day I visited him and I will know that I have done well. It is a goal that he gave me, a lesson he taught me without even knowing it. I am blessed for having known him; I am a better man for it. He will be missed and he will be remembered.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.
