Blackie Seymour Obituary

Blackie Seymour, 72, of Worcester, died of heart failure, arrhythmia and kidney failure April 30, 2011 at his home.

He leaves his devoted wife and leading lady of nearly 17 years, Alicia Liss Dioletis Seymour; a beloved daughter, Elena Seymour of Fredericksburg, VA; and a strong, colossal supporting cast of friends.

Blackie was born Everett Clayton Seymour Jr. on Nov. 17, 1938, in Worcester, the son of Everett C. Seymour and Ruth (Lundblad) Seymour. He attended Commerce High School and graduated from the Loew's-Poli Elm Street Theatre, Royal Theatre, Family Theatre and several other Worcester movie houses, where he enjoyed countless matinees and double features with his father.

Blackie lived his passion for the movies and serials of the 1930s and 1940s, becoming a film librarian, archivist and preservationist. He wrote hundreds of articles on classic movies and the people who made them for Classic Images, Films of the Golden Age and other vintage-movie publications. He wrote, acted in and directed "The Return of the Copperhead," a re-creation of the serials of the 1940s, which was filmed locally in the 1980s. Blackie was acknowledged and respected as an expert on all things Universal and Republic by several of those studios' actors, directors and technicians whom he had befriended since the 1950s.

For more than 50 years on Sunday nights, Blackie hosted a show of a serial chapter followed by a movie for a group of friends and family. Although reluctant to go more than two miles from his home, he touched the lives of many people around the world and was beloved for his saber-like wit, raised eyebrow and devilish charm.

"Even a man who is pure at heart

And says his prayers by night,

May become a wolf when the wolfbane blooms

And the autumn moon is bright."

Calling hours at the Athy Memorial Home, 111 Lancaster St., Worcester are Wednesday, May 4, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be Thursday, May 5, at Noon in the funeral home. Following burial at Rural Cemetery in Worcester, everyone is invited back to his home for a reception and his favorite movie.

Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Assn., 330 Congress St., Ste 501, Boston, 02210 or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Blvd., Ste. 1010, Rockville, MD 20852.

The Man the Myth the Legend. I don't think one day goes by that I am not reminded of Blackie. I followed in my mentors footsteps. When people in the movie collectors circle ask me how do you know some much about universal horror films and universal players I always say Blackie Seymour tought me the movie poster business. I couldn't have asked for a better teacher. Thanks Blackiie for a lifetime of good memories. Rest In Peace.

Dear Elena,

Please accept my delayed condolences as I am only learning about this today. Blackie was a Legend and I cannot tell you how lucky and happy I was to have your family in my life growing up. I recall the wonderful part in a birthday poem:

"Why do his neighbors give him a car? Why do his neighbors think he's a star?"

"BECAUSE HE'S BLACKIE!"

Much love,
Amy Ingersoll Butcher

Dear Mrs Seymour, my deepest condolences to you on Blackie's passing. I knew Blackie back in the late 1960's when he use to live on Bell Hill. I use to go to his Sunday movie matinee's and like Freddie Poe i also bought my first movie poster from Blackie. Sunday nights will never be the same, whether there in person or just in my thoughts, I will always remember Blackie's place. His Wife Alicia and daughter Elena we're only two of the special people who surrounded Blackie. He was a teacher, mentor, and friend. My only regret is having allowed our friendship to drift apart. Blackie, you may have left Worcester, but you'll never leave our hearts.

Vaya con Dios to my old buddy, Blackie, one of the nicest, funniest, most generous guys I've ever known. Alicia, as a wise person once told me, "Don't mourn for what you have lost, but instead rejoice because you had it in the first place."

My deepest sympathies to you Alicia on the loss of your beloved husband and to you Elena on the loss of your dear dad. Blackie was one of the most unique persons I have ever met. He was very generous to share his love of the older movies of the 30's and 40's. I'm grateful to Brian for introducing me to him. Our time with him and our friends at his home was part of what brought us together. Alicia and Elena, may your happy memories with Blackie help to sustain you in the years ahead.

Be Still

Be still like the grass on a melancholy summer day
Be still like desert shrub.

Be calm and you will hear your loved one speak, in the stillness, in the calm, their love resounds.

If you are still this promise I make, you will hear the voice of your loved one helping you along your way.

Dear Allie & Elena my deepest condolences on Blackie's passing on to that great movie theater in the sky. He sold me my first movie poster at the old Belmont St homestead back in the early 1970's. Blackie was truely one of a kind and a Worcester Icon. Elena might remember me from the Worcester Childrens Theater when we both acted in the Good Witch of Boston. Blackie will be missed. LONG LIVE THE PENTGRAM! Best Freddie Poe. The House of Poe Collection. Worcester Ma.

Dear Mrs. Seymour,
I truly am sorry for the loss of your Husband. Please give my condolences to all of the family. I was in absolute awe when I saw his photo. My favorite screen legend of all time is Clark Gable and I must say Blackie looks like he was all that and then some!
Know that you will be in my prayers for sure because I've already been where you now are.
Sincerely,
